On June 30th, Terrence Boyle, the National General Secretary of DPE, published a post on
“The (Unofficial) DPE National Facebook Group!” stating his intention to ensure that only
members of Alpha chapter are elected to the National Board. In this post, he argued that
members from any other chapter would likely advocate for admitting and expanding the
power of “non- US citizens” and “women” in the fraternity. He argued that such changes
would “utterly alter the nature of the DPE Fraternity.”
Mr. Boyle’s post indicates sexism and xenophobia. Additionally, in the comments following
Mr. Boyle’s posting it was revealed that in an email to a DPE alumna, Mr. Boyle made a
disparaging and transphobic comment about intersex persons. It was also revealed that as
National General Secretary Mr. Boyle maintained a policy requiring that if a DPE Sorority
sister wished to bring a male date to the DPE Christmas party, they would be required to
spend a day cleaning the DPE house. They were also required to prepare food for the event
and do the Alpha brothers’ laundry, including dirty socks. No similar rule was applied to
the male members of the fraternity.
When confronted with these concerns on the Facebook thread. Mr. Boyle did not apologize
and persisted in a condescending manner. At one point, he posted “of course you do,
liberals believe anything should allowed just sol ong as it is compulsory.”(sic). Mr. Boyle
additionally failed to condemn sexist and transphobic comments made by other DPE
members even after being specifically asked to do so.
Mr. Boyle’s statements are completely inconsistent with the values of DPE and simple basic
human decency. We are ashamed to be part of an organization whose leadership would
engage in this conduct.
Notwithstanding any bylaw reforms or changes in the DPE governance structure, we
demand that Mr. Boyle be immediately removed from his leadership position, that there be
a thorough investigation into his conduct, and that the National Leadership immediately
apologize to the affected parties for his statements and practices.
Sincerely,
Claudia Leonor
