What is expected of me, how much should I

help the children ? Helpers

At the beginning of the activity the class teacher or member of
management team will involve the children in setting expecta-
tions and targets for the activity. Individual children will need
a little more or a little less help. In time and through taking the

initiative from the teacher you will become aware of
individual differences. If in doubt please just ask the teacher.

What should I do if a child is ‘off task’ and not working?

The class teacher or member of the management team will

oversee and manage the children’s behaviour and focus of
attention. If you feel the child is not responding to you, let the
teacher know and the situation will be resolved by her / him.

Will I be working with my child’s class ?

Usually parents work with children in classes different to their

own child. However with some types of help such as helping
in the library, with costumes for a school play or cycling profi-
ciency training, parents may be helping with their own child’s
class as well as other classes.

Involving helpers in children’s learning
We greatly appreciate the time and help given to school. Your
help is a valuable way for
children to benefit from extra adult support in classes

skills and knowledge
What can I help with?
We welcome helpers in any area — Writing, Paired Reading,
lunchtime and after school clubs, Library, PE. Health, helping
with Book Fair sales, preparing costumes for school plays or
delivering the cycling proficiency programme in Primary 6 and 7.
Please speak to a member of staff if you have a specific interest
or an amount of time you wish to share with the children. We
are always reviewing and updating how we work with parents
and helpers to make the most of the help and resources available
to the school and children.
Helper Information
Every year the first newsletter of the year invites parents to
help support the learning experiences in school in whatever
capacity they can. A list of the parent volunteers is kept for
staff to refer to and make use of. A member of the manage-
ment team, a parent or the class teacher will explain the role
of the helper, introduce the helper to the relevant class
teacher, resource area or other parent helpers . All helpers will
be made aware of and should familiarise themselves with, the
school and Aberdeen City policy on acceptable use of internet
and mobile technology devices, child protection and relevant
confidentiality and data protection practices.
Work experience and visiting students induction meetings are
organised with a member of the management team prior to
working with the children.
Child Protection
If a child says anything to you that causes you concern, please
do not enter into a discussion about the concern with the child
but report this immediately to the class teacher or the child
protection co-ordinator — Anne Wilkinson, Head Teacher.
Confidentiality
All personal class, pupil and school information gained through
helping in school should be dealt with in a confidential manner
and only discussed discreetly and sensitively with the
appropriate school staff.
Fire Exits
Please familiarise yourself with fire exit procedures. There is
fire exit information in each room / area of the school.
