GARDEN NEWS
A Diamond Anniversary

H
aving turned 60 years young, Fellows Riverside
Gardens is celebrating its “Diamond” anniversary in
2018. The land on which it sits was previously the
homestead of Samuel and Elizabeth Fellows. On Elizabeth’s
death in 1958, the land was gifted to Mill Creek Park with
the stipulation that it be used as a free public garden. The
first plantings took place in 1963, and the Modern Rose
Garden was established the following year. Additional
planting beds were added over the next two decades that
turned Fellows Riverside Gardens into what it is today – one
of the premier free public gardens in the country. In honor
of its Diamond anniversary, garden staff has planted flowers
in the seasonal beds and Deyor Plaza in deconstructed and
intersecting diamond patterns. In addition, new “Diamond
in the Rough” topiaries
have been planted
near the Gazebo. The
topiaries feature the
work of local topiary
artist Mike Gibson. The
Gardens will also give
special recognition to
its Diamond anniversary
during Winter
Celebration. You can also learn more about the history of
the Gardens by viewing the exhibit in the John C. Melnick
Museum, located downstairs beyond the Rossi Auditorium.

GARDEN TOURS

Notes from a Garden Traveler

W
e saw row after golden row of daylilies – millions were planted! – in the
growing fields of Walters Gardens in southwest Michigan, and cascading
flowers in gorgeous swaths of display beds at Four Star Greenhouse, the
country’s source of Proven Winner annuals.

We took in outdoor sculpture by Henry Moore and Ai Wei Wei at Frederik Meijer
Gardens & Sculpture Park, and then walked indoors to find 1600 brass fronds and
cones and leaves under our feet, inlaid across the floor of the five-story glasshouse
conservatory. Meijer’s Japanese Garden offered serenity with its Zen garden, its
undulating rock-lined paths, its near-hidden waterfall that gently splashed into and
then tipped a carefully balanced bamboo rod.

We learned the inspiring history of Holland, Michigan’s Dutch windmill, and found
bundles of freshly picked lavender awaiting each of us as we climbed down the
windmill’s stairs.

In Grand Rapids at the Meyer May House, we were bewitched by Frank Lloyd Wright’s
genius as we toured this most complete restoration of his Prairie-style architecture,
with its 116 exquisite art-deco windows and long horizontal lines of brickwork.

There was Michigan State University’s acres of trial gardens and display beds, so
beautifully maintained by its Horticulture Program’s students and staff….and a half-
dozen restaurant stops, each a favorite with locals and a feast for us.

…No surprise that our ‘Great Growers of the Great Lakes State’ early August trip
through southern Michigan drew superlative reviews on all fronts – flowers, food,
and friendliness. The 2-night, 3-day trip wrapped up Friends’ Garden Travels for 2018
(there were earlier garden tours to Philadelphia and northeastern Ohio). Friends has
been a sponsor of 25 garden tours since 2008, enabling easy, friendly travel to, and
guided discovery of, beautiful gardens and horticultural settings across Ohio and as
far as Niagara Falls, New York, Virginia and Kentucky. Every trip draws at least one third
new participants to the mix of garden-eager travelers, so we know that our goal of
enhancing the appreciation for gardens is working. Our tours give the opportunity to
explore the world of gardens and come home with a keener understanding for all that
Fellows Riverside Gardens offers to our community. Consider climbing on board for
next year’s day trips or overnight travel!

Special thanks to the Friends committee that planned and managed this year’s tours:
Lucy Setz, Deby Clark, Elise Huzjak, and Janet Yaniglos.

side, for planting seeds and transplanting
seedlings---an important winter and
spring-time production space. Beyond
the garage are several small, simply built
structures to hold growing plants.
There’s also a modern ‘high-tunnel’

through donations from Friends. Its high

Rock Gardening: Reimagining a Classic Style
for Today’s Garden
9/20 | 6:30 - 7:30 pm

I
nspired by the tiny plants and dramatic, rocky landscapes found on mountain
tops, rock gardening uses a range of unusual, small plants in combination with
beautiful stones to create miniaturized landscapes. This approach to gardening
is water-wise, perfect for containers, small gardens, and for gardeners interested
in exploring a whole new group of beautiful plants. In this talk Joseph will share
beautiful images of rock garden to get you inspired, the basic principles of creating
rock gardens, and an introduction to some of the most beautiful and easy to grow
rock garden plants to get you started.
A life-long gardener and lover of plants, Joseph earned his degree in
horticulture from Ohio State University, worked at specialty rare plants nurseries in
Michigan and Japan, and was named by Organic Gardening Magazine as one of
“...six young horticulturists who are helping to shape how America gardens.” He is
the author of Plant Breeding for the Home Gardener (Timber Press, 2013) and Rock
