ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 4

Thayer School of Engineering Summer 2018

Prof. Snyder

Solve the following problems from the textbook by R.C. Hibbeler, 3rd and 4th Editions:
Problems: 6–2, 6–16, 6–33, 6–57, 6–59, 6–60, 6–61, 7-91, 7-92, 7-104, 8-39

6-2. Determine the area and the centroid of the area.

SOLUTION
ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 4

*6–16. Locate the centroid 𝑦̅ of the paraboloid.

ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 4

6-33. Replace the distributed loading by an equivalent resultant force and specify
its location, measured horizontally from point A. Find the reactions at A and B.

∑ 𝑀𝐴 = 0 = (5 m)𝐵𝑦 − (2.06 m)(3.10 kN)

𝐵𝑦 = 𝟏. 𝟐𝟖 𝐤𝐍

∑ 𝐹𝑦 = 0 = 𝐴𝑦 − 𝐹𝑅 + 𝐵𝑦 = 𝐴𝑦 − 3.10 kN + 1.28 kN

𝐴𝑦 = 𝟏. 𝟖𝟐 𝐤𝐍

∑ 𝐹𝑥 = 0 = 𝐴𝑥
ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 4

6-57. Determine the moment of inertia of the triangular area about the x axis.
ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 4

6-59. Determine the distance 𝑦̅ to the centroid of

the beam's cross-sectional area; then find
the moment of inertia about the 𝑥 ′ axis.

SOLUTION

6-60. Determine the moment of inertia of the beam's cross-sectional area about the x axis.

ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 4
7–91. The piece of rubber is originally rectangular. Determine the average shear strain 𝛾𝑥𝑦 at A if
corners B and D are subjected to the displacements that cause the rubber to distort as shown by
the dashed lines.

*7–92. The piece of rubber is originally rectangular and subjected to the deformation shown by
the dashed lines. Determine the average normal strain along the diagonal DB and side AD.
ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 4

*7–104. Determine the average punching shear stress

the circular shaft creates in the metal plate through
section AC and BD. Also, what is the bearing stress
developed on the surface of the plate under the shaft?

8–39. The 8-mm-diameter bolt is made of an aluminum alloy. It fits

through a magnesium sleeve that has an inner diameter of 12 mm and an
outer diameter of 20 mm. If the original lengths of the bolt and sleeve are
80 mm and 50 mm, respectively, determine the strains in the sleeve and
the bolt if the nut on the bolt is tightened so that the tension in the bolt is
8 kN. Assume the material at A is rigid. E al = 70 GPa, E mg = 45 GPa.
