ENGS 33 Solid Mechanics Homework 6

Thayer School of Engineering Summer 2018

Prof. Snyder

Solve the following problems from the textbook by R.C. Hibbeler, 3rd and 4th Editions:
Problems: 10–1, 10–37, 10–56, 11–2, 11–6, 11–13, 11–19, 11–51, 11–70
Label values on all shear and moment diagrams.

10-1 A shaft is made of a steel alloy having an allowable shear stress of allow = 12 ksi. If the
diameter of the shaft is 1.5 in., determine the maximum torque T that can be transmitted.
What would be the maximum torque T' if a 1-in.-diameter hole is bored through the
shaft? Sketch the shear-stress distribution along a radial line in each case.
ENGS 33, 2018X, Homework 6 Solutions

10-37 The splined ends and gears attached to the A-36 steel shaft are subjected to the torques
shown. Determine the angle of twist of end B with respect to end A. The shaft has a
diameter of 40 mm.
ENGS 33, 2018X, Homework 6 Solutions

10-56. The shaft is made of A-36 steel and has a diameter

of 80 mm. It is fixed at B and the support at A has a
torsional stiffness of k = 0.5 MN·m/rad. If it is
subjected to the gear torques shown, determine the
absolute maximum shear stress in the shaft.

11-2. Draw the shear and moment 11-6. Draw the shear and moment
diagrams for the simply supported beam. diagrams for the overhang beam.

11-13. Draw the shear and moment 11-19. Draw the shear and moment
diagrams for the compound beam. It is diagrams for the beam.
supported by a smooth place at A which
slides within the groove and so it cannot
support a vertical force, although it can
support a moment and axial load.
