 What is a logo and why do we need them?
 What types of images go into creating a logo?

Learning Objectives
Students will:
 Learn how to create vector images in CorelDRAW by using the Pen, Shape and
Selection tools
 Learn how to create and work within a black and white and limited color palette.
 Examine and discuss what is and is not a logo and why they are necessary.
 Learn how to pair type and images in order to express the identity of a company.
 Experiment with different ways type may be treated in a logo design.

Background
A logo is more than an interesting symbol or type on a page. It is a powerful communication
and marketing tool. Logos have the ability to foster instant recognition of a company, person
or product by the public. As the messages or identity that a company chooses to promote over
time may change, so does the design of their logo.

Context
You are a marketing manager here at SHS Marketing Firm. As a marketing manager, you will be
responsible for delivering high quality projects on time and to budget through the effective
management of timelines, people and resources. The Marketing Project Manager is the
agency’s control tower, managing workload and resources with precision. It is essential that
you manage your workload in order to meet the needs of all clients.

Project Design Brief


Client X is looking to rebrand their company. Focus groups have indicated that the client’s logo
is in need of a redesign. The client does not want to abandon all aspects of their current logo,
so make sure to incorporate some features of the current design. It is your responsibility to
create 3 alternate logos for Client X. After sketching out your three logos, seek feedback from
other members (peers) in your firm.

Rules and Principles of Logo Design


1. A logo must be describable
2. A logo must be memorable
3. A logo must be effective without color
4. A logo must be scalable. So it should look good at 12”X12” and 1”X1”
