BRIEF HISTORY OF ENGLAND AND UNITED STATES
England is the most extensive and populated territory of the United
Kingdom. Inhabited by Celtic peoples since the 5th century BC. C., was colonized
by the Romans between 43 d. C. and early 5th century . From then on it was invaded
by a series of Germanic peoples ( Angles , Saxons and Jutes ) who expelled
the Celts , partially Romanized, to Wales , Scotland , Cornwall and French
Brittany . In the 10th century , after resisting a series of Viking attacks, England
became politically unified. After the accession of James VI of Scotland to the throne
of England in 1603 and the annexation of Scotland by England in 1707 it is less
appropriate to differentiate the history of England from that of the rest of the United
Kingdom.
The European continent does not have, to the northwest, a set of islands formerly
known as the Brittany [ citation needed ] , with Great Britain being the most important
for its size, which gives it its name. The island was relatively insignificant in the
history of Western civilization. There are few signs of the language or civilization of
the first inhabitants, only megalithic monuments, such as Stonehenge , dating from
the Bronze Age (around 2300 BC ).
In 1619, the black slaves who come from Africa to work in the British colonies begin
to arrive. The following year, English Puritans founded Plymouth . Between 1630
and 1640, a large migration of British settlers populated Massachusetts and
Connecticut. British troops take the province of New Holland (of the Dutch) in 1664.
The region is recaptured by the Dutch in 1673, but the following year it falls again
into the hands of the British. It is then ', when it is baptized New York.
