Kaliurang
Kaliurang is a tourist attraction in Yogyakarta province. It is not big area. It lies on the
slop of volcano. The volcano is Mount Merapi.
There are forests at the valleys. The weather of Kaliurang is cool all day. But it is cold at
night. Sometimes it is foggy, too. On a bright night if you look up at the mountain peak, you
will see glowing material flowing down the valleys.

Sekaten Fair

Sekaten is a celebration that is held for one month every year. In Yogyakarta, it is
held in the north square of the Sultan’s Palace.
There is fun fair there. Many people come to see the fair. Theu buy foods, shirts,
and other things at the stands. It is very noisy because the stands turn on tape –recordder
loudly. They want to attract people to come play on the merry-go-round and ride on mini
trains.
In the sekaten ceremony the people listen to the gamelan sekaten in front of the
mosque. There is also a “Gunungan” procession ceremony. A “Gunungan” is very big
cone made of rice with vegetables and side-dishes. During the procession, the crowd
gather and rush to get the food from the “Gunungan”. They are happy when they can get
some food.
