Literature review:

Developing a sustainable supply chain is not just an operational issue but an issue to be dealt at a
strategic level. Balkan Cetinkaya, Richard Cuthbertson Graham Ewer along with the European
logistics association in the book Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Practical Ideas for moving
towards best practices, have studied strategic initiatives by best performing companies that provide
a detailed understanding of strategic requirements for implementing sustainable supply chains. The
book also provides a broad understanding of frameworks for tracking sustainable initiatives and
monitoring supply chain improvements. The book focusses on the need to develop sustainable
supply chains - economically, environmentally and socially. The book provides decision on realistic
choices and decisions to be made and not a wish list of impractical choices.

Sustainable operations and supply chain management, by Valeria Belvedere and Alberto Grando,
write about the various decisions to be made along the product life cycle, following a path of
product design, sourcing, manufacturing, packaging and physical distribution. The book covers
sustainability and future trends as well as performance measurement and control.

The transport, storage and handling of goods impose a heavy burden on the environment. These
logistical activities contribute to a range of environmental and social problems. The book green
logistics by Alan Mckinnon and Micheal browne provides unique insights into the nature of these
impacts and the actions that companies and governments can take to deal with them. The book also
provides insights on environmental impact of innovations such as 3D printing, drone distribution
technology etc.

Greening the supply chain by Purba Halady Rao deals with major environmental that arise from
supply chains. It details how various companies have greened their supply chains by adopting
innovative measures in conjunction with attaining enhanced business performance.

Beyond supply chain; Empowering responsible value chains, white paper by World economic forum
in collaboration with Accenture, talks about the impact of supply chain development both positive
and negative. The paper talks about evaluating supply chain practices on the basis of the triple
bottom line principle. The report identified a comprehensive set of 31 proven practices,
underpinned by industry examples that provide guidance for companies looking to codify their own
specific portfolio of triple advantage improvement measures. Beyond Supply Chains has developed a
decision framework that prioritizes the identified practices by their potential to create triple
advantage. Although the model uses consumer goods companies as a reference, it can be tailored
according to the conditions of a specific industry or an individual enterprise.

Gap analysis: All the literature largely provides strategic requirement and practices to be
implemented for sustainable supply chain initiatives. There isn’t a comprehensive framework
present for strategic issues implementation of sustainable supply chain initiatives. There isn’t a
framework or tool to evaluate supply chain practices that have been implemented. We have based
our work on addressing this gap by looking at what can be the strategic initiatives to be taken and
developing a small tool ware for evaluating sustainable supply chain initiatives.
