Carbon supported Pd–Cu catalysts for highly selective rearrangementof furfural to

cyclopentanone
Milan Hroneca,∗, Katarína Fulajtárováa, Ivo Vávrab, Tomáˇs Sotáka, Edmund Dobroˇckab,Matej Miˇcuˇsíkc

 Compound to synthesis fungicides, pharmaceuticals,

rubber chemicals, flavor, and fragrance chemicals.
 Have potential to prepare polyamides, diesel or jet
fuels (via condensation and hydrogenation), and
polyolefin stabilizers
Cyclopentanone

 Acid catalyzed dehydration of xylose

 One of platform molecule to produce non-petroleum
derived chemical

Furfural

 Mostly metal hydrogenate C=C or C=O bond instead C-O bond.

 Metal catalyst : Pt, Pd, Ru, Ni, Raney Ni
 Using Cu catalyst  selective hydrogenation of C=O bond while leaving C=C bond in furfural intact

Selective Conversion of Furfural to Cyclopentanone with CuZnAl Catalysts

Jianhua Guo, Guangyue Xu, Zheng Han, Ying Zhang,* Yao Fu, and Qingxiang Guo

 Catalyst that we want to develop  low cost, high activity and stability
 Cu  earth-abundant, environmentally friendly
 CuZnAl used as catalyst for methanol synthesis and water gas shift
 Copper  as active component
 ZnO  improve Cu dispersion and number of active site
 Alumina  stabilize Cu-Zn structure and increase surface area

Focus on this study : Effect of Cu/Zn molar ratios and calcination temperature, reaction time, H2 pressure,
recycling on catalytic performance
