S.P. Puri Each soul is potentially divine. The goal is to manifest this divinity within by controlling nature, external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic control, or philosophy---by one or more orallofthese-andbe free. --Vivekananda The term ‘real goal’ implies the existence of an understanding that even though we appear to be planning and working for different things, we do have some ultimate goal in our mind which we are striving to attain. Defining the real goal is of paramount importance, since our entire life and effort are directed towards the attainment of the specified goal. The clarity of the real goal of life as well as the state of mind with which we are disposed, are two very important aspects which play a very profound role for the pursuit ofourreal goal. One has to be philosophic for comprehending the real goal. Philosophy is not luxury of few; it is a necessity for one and all. According to Plato, man is either a philosopher or a fool. Philosophy is a prerequisite for deep understanding of life in a very holistic and thorough manner. The understanding encompasses fundamental questions such as: Who am 1? Why are we here? What is the real problem of man-bondage? Whatis really in the hands of man? Why man is unique? Each of these questions impacts our life profoundly and so requires to be analyzed with all the seriousness, Our conscious and subconscious perceptions affect us greatly. Those who are conscious of them, have the capability of changing them since basically these are their own understanding. Those who are not conscious of them, have no choice but to dance to their tunes and suffer helplessly. All of us choose a comfort zone and keep on living in it, till we remove these self-imposed boundaries all together. We have the freedom to do all this and that is what the compendium of the knowledge of life--Vedanta is all about. ‘The moment we fix an extraneous goal for our self, then that very moment we tacitly accept various fundamental facts of life. When we resolve that our fulfillment lies in some object or achievement yonder, then in effect imply that ‘I intrinsically. lack something to be fulfilled.’ Butall these presumptions are totally baseless. In reality, ‘that’ which constantly manifests as ‘I’ in our hearts is an infinitely transcendental, self-effulgent and blissful existence and the means of knowledge of this is deep enquiry and contemplation of the basis of Vedanta—Sravana (hearing), Manana (contemplation), Niddidhyasana (repeated meditation) of Vedanta scriptures, is the proof of the knowledge of Truth of Life. Vedanta not only reveals truth about us but also about the whole perceptible world. Everything that is perceptible is in the realm of time and space and therefore is transient and ephemeral. Thus when we keep an extraneous goal then we simultaneously affirm that I am a limited and lacking person and the world outside is permanent and capable of giving me what I lack. Our life based on these untruths can never give us a feeling of fulfillment and contentment. According to the Vedas, there are two distinct types of actions. They are Preyas and Shreyas. The difference is at the level of “Awareness” motivating each type of action. Whereas, Preyas refer to self-centered actions, Shreyas has a self-less basis for the action performed. Preyas is a way of living life that appeals to the senses. The ideal way of living is based on the true facts of life. The truth is that I am fulfilled since I am of divine origin; thus the world has nothing to offer to me. Action on our part is VEDIC THOUGHTS OCTOBER 2017, CHANDIGARH, only meant to help us serve others. This should be our fundamental motivation to render service to others lovingly and selflessly without any expectation of even gratitude, Our service to others should be as natural and effortless as the fragrance of a flower. No feeling of doer ship should ever enter our minds. This is the path of Shreyas—good, to all about. Holding our heads high, with loving hearts and enthusiasm, work on selflessly for sthe good of all around. Love is a virtue that increases on giving. On the contrary, the path of Preyas—pleasant, is one of the dubious untruths. We may get the object of our enjoyment and temporarily feel fulfilled bur soon enough we will realize that there has been a fundamental error. While treading the path of Shreyas, if we are awake all the time, then alone we will never stumble and get hurt. So let us exercise our unblemished judgment in treading a path of Shreyas which may appearto be slightly painful in the beginning but finally this path alone is the way toreal fulfillment. In this world of many, he who sees the One, in this ever-changing world, he who sees Him, who never changes, as the Soul ofhis own soul, as his own Self, he is free, he is blessed, he has reached the goal.
