GK ANNULAR BLOWOUT PREVENTER

1 Equipment
GK Annular Blowout Preventer

1.1 Reference Documents:

• Liquid Penetrant Inspection API Compliance (AMS 2644, API 16A, ASTM E165 And ASNT SNT-TC-1A)
• Hardness Testing (ASTM E10 OR ISO 6506-1, ASTM E18 OR ISO 6508-1, AND ASTM E110, ASTM
E384 OR ISO 6507-1)
• Magnetic Particle Inspection API 16A Compliance (API 16A, ASTM E709 AND ASNT SNT-TC-1A)

2 Scope
This inspection and maintenance procedure outlines the pre-operational maintenance, post-operational maintenance
and dimensional inspection report for condition-based maintenance. This supplemental inspection procedure does
not satisfy American Petroleum Institute Standard 53 (API STD 53) and only a statement of fact may be issued if
the work is performed by GE Oil & Gas.

For 5 year recertification of equipment per API STD 53, contact GE Oil & Gas or an approved GE Oil &
Gas channel partner.

3 Pre-Operational Inspection
1. Clean exposed side outlet seal surfaces (AX, BX), visually inspect, and grease with recommended lubricant.
2. Clean and visually inspect all exposed O-rings. Replace if damaged or worn. Grease with recommended lubricant.
3. Clean and visually inspect opening/closing chamber ports (SAE Code 62 or NPT)
4. Visually inspect all exposed external surfaces for mechanical damage.

The above visual inspections should be performed during between well maintenance.

4 Post-Operational Maintenance
1. Disassemble the equipment from the stack assembly, leaving the main drill-through connections together (e.g.
upper annular body connected to lower annular head, etc.).
2. For radial latch-type annular ABOPs, unlatch the head of the ABOP. For screw-type ABOPs, unscrew the head
from the body.

3. Visually inspect the piston skirt and tapered bowl for mechanical damage (See Figure 3: GK Annular, page 11,
Item 1). If damage is found, remove the piston to visually inspect the seal grooves (See Figure 3: GK Annular,
page 11, Item 2).
4. Visually inspect the head inner diameter (ID) seal grooves for damage (See Figure 3: GK Annular, page
11, Item 3).
• For radial latch-type ABOPs, visual the radial latch jaw profile (See Figure 3: GK Annular, page 11, Item 4),
and corresponding radial latches, for any deformation or rolled metal.
• For screw-type ABOPs, visual the screw profile on the head and the body for any deformation or rolled metal
(See Figure 3: GK Annular, page 11, Item 5)
5. Visually inspect the wear plate (See Figure 3: GK Annular, page 11, Item 6) for mechanical damage from use.
Wear plates with excessive scarring should be replaced. Visually inspect the packing element (See Figure 3: GK
Annular, page 11, Item 7) for any cracks or splitting of the rubber and metal interfaces.
6. Inspect the vertical bore (See Figure 3: GK Annular, page 11, Item 8) for wear and damage from drill string and
drilling tools, especially around the ring grooves. If through-bore diameter exceeds defined American Petroleum
Institute (API) maximum allowable dimensions in key-seated areas, the equipment must be repaired.
7. Visually inspect the body seal diameters (See Figure 2: GK Annular BOP — Latched Head, page 9 , Item 9).

The above maintenance should be performed during between well maintenance.

After post-op, or on a yearly basis, whichever occurs later, inspect and record wear-based inspection data
per Section 8: Visual Inspection Report per Post-Operational Maintenance, page 12.

5 Five (5) Year Inspection and Maintenance Schedule

1. Completely disassemble the equipment from the stack assembly. Remove all O-ring seals.
2. Clean all internal and external surfaces of the ABOP.
3. Remove all the oil, grease, mud, buildup, coating etc. prior to being inspected.
4. Record part and serial number.
5. Gage all fastener threads, male and female. Replace all fasteners that do not gage properly. Repair or replace all
female threads that do not gage properly.
6. Perform magnetic-particle inspection on internal and external surfaces of main components:
• Body
• Head
• Piston

• Opening Chamber Head

• Inner Sleeve
• Fasteners
7. Perform liquid penetrant inspection on seal areas of corrosion resistant alloy inlayed ring grooves.
8. Take hardness readings on the body, piston, and head at two locations each, 180° apart.
9. Perform visual and dimensional inspection per applicable Inspection Template.

For 5 year recertification of equipment per API STD 53, contact GE Oil & Gas or an approved GE Oil &
Gas channel partner.

6 Additional Maintenance Due to Severe Operating Conditions

Immediately after any event of Extreme Service, additional maintenance may be required. Contact GE Subsea
Systems & Drilling for direction and recommendations.
Extreme Service is defined, but not limited to the following:
• Any occurrence of over pressurization of the annular.
• Emergency disconnects or drive off.
• Severe storm and/or high current seas while connected.

7 Inspection Diagrams
A visual diagram and table of the parts of the GK Annular BOP are given in Figure 1: GK Annular BOP — Screwed
Head, page 8 ,Figure 2: GK Annular BOP — Latched Head, page 9 and Table 1: GK Parts List, page 10:
