Q 8. A concrete column is reinforced with 4 bars of 20mm dia. Determine the load
capacity of the column using M25 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel if the size of
the column is 400mm x 400mm?
(a) 1950 kN (b) 2000 kN (c) 1500 kN (d)1100 kN

Solution:
(i) Characteristics strength of concrete, fck=25 MPa

(ii) Characteristics strength of reinforcing steel, fy=415 MPa

(iii) Area of the column, Ac= 400mm × 400mm = 160000 sq. mm

𝜋
(iv) Area of steel, Asc = 4 × 4 × 20 × 20 = 1256.64 sq. mm

(v) Minimum eccentricity = 0.05 × 400 = 20 mm (= 20 mm as per Cl. 25.4)

(vi) Pu = 0.4 fck Ac + 0.67 fy Asc

= {0.4 × 25 × (160000- 1256.64) + 0.67 × 415 × 1256.64} / 1000
= 1950 kN

Q 9. A square column of 5.0m unsupported length restrained in position and direction at
both ends carries an axial load of 1200 kN. Assuming M20 and Fe 415 and 1% of steel,
what would be the dimension of the column (to the nearest multiple of 10)?
(a) 420 mm x 420 mm
(b) 500 mm x 500 mm
(c) 350 mm x 350 mm
(d) 300 mm x 300 mm

Solution:
(i) Characteristics strength of concrete, fck=20 MPa

(ii) Characteristics strength of reinforcing steel, fy=415 MPa

(iii) Let gross area of the column, Ag

(iv) Area of steel, Asc = 1% of Ag = 0.01 Ag

(v) Pu = 0.4 fck Ac + 0.67 fy Asc

or, 1.5 × 1200 × 103 = 0.4 × 20 × (Ag - 0.01 Ag ) + 0.67 × 415 × 0.01 Ag
or, 1800 × 103 = 0.4 × 20 × 0.99 Ag + 0.67 × 415 × 0.01 Ag
or, Ag = 167441.56 sq.mm

(vi) D = 409.2 mm. hence provide 420 mm × 420 mm square column.

Answer: 9 (a) 420 mm x 420 mm
