Calculation of the Bedding of the Dia 800mm Pipe under the Level Crossing at DK0+037

1. Basic Data
1.1 The description
We would like to use the reinforced concrete pipe(NP3 900mm ) as the service duct embedded under the DK0+037 level
crossing to cross through the water pipes, electrical line, telecom line at the captioned level crossing.

1.2 The Relevant Reference

1.) Reinforced Concrete Pipe (NP3 Dia 800) Testing Report

2.) BS-EN-1295-1-1998 Structural Design of Buried Pipelines Under Various Condition of Loading
3.) BS-8005 Part 1. Guide to New Sewerage Construction

2. The Design load for rigid pipe

2.1 Calculate the Soil Load W'c

According to the formula mentioned in the BS-EN-1295 NA.4.1, the Soil Load Wc should be calculated as the follow:

W'c=Cc x x Bc2 1)
Where:
W'c - The soil load per unit length of pipe in embankment and wide trench conditions.
Cc - The soil load coefficient in embankment condition.
- Unit weight of soil
Bc - Outside diameter of the pipe.

Cc= 1 2)

Cc= +( 3)

The Cc should be taken the lower value of the formula 2 and 3

Where:
H- The depth of cover to the top of the pipe
He- The height of the plane of equal settlement above the top of the pipe.

As per the indication in the BS-EN-1295-1998 Clouse NA.4.3.1 the soil properties
The value of the Ku = 0.19
The value of the = 19.6 Kn/m3
Further
Scenario 1
Assume the cover depth to top of the pipe is H1= 1.5 m actual 1.69m
According to the pipe testing report, the pipe's outside diameter is
Bc= 0.96 m
0.8m+0.08+0.08

By using the formula 2,

1
Cc1= = 2.13 1a

By using the formula 3, as per indicated in the BS-EN-1295 Clouse NA.4.1.1, the Cc can be obtained from the table NA.2
as shown below

As shown in the table NA.2, the Cc equation is determined by the combination value of rsd and p
Where:
rsd-Settlement deflection ratio
p- Projection ratio

As per the indication in the BS-EN-1295 mentioned in NA.4.3.3, the recommended combination value of rsd and p is 0.7
Hence

Scenairo1 Assume the cover depth is 1.5m

Cc1= 1.59 0.09 = 2.39

Bc

After comparing the Cc values from the formula 2 and 3, the lower value is taken
Cc1= 2.13

By using formula 1, the soil load W'c is

W'c1=Cc1 x x Bc2 = 38.54 Kn/m

2.2 Calculate the concentrated surcharge load Wcsu

According to the formula mentioned in the BS-EN-1295 NA.4.1.4, the concentrated surcharge Wcsu should be calculated as the follow:
Wcsu= Ps x Bc 5)
Where:
Ps- Surcharge Pressure

As per the indication in the BS-EN-1295 Clouse NA.4.1.4, the value of the Ps can be obtained from the figure NA.6.

Scenario 1 Assumed the cover depth is 1.5m

The level crossing road is considered as the train load,
and take the conservative value of the Ps= 90 Kn/m2
By using the formula 5, the Wcsu can be calculated

Wcsu1= Ps1 x Bc = 86.4 Kn/m

2.4 Calculate the total design external load We

According to the formula mentioned in the BS-EN-1295 NA.4.1.6, the total design external load We should be calculated as the
follow:

Scenario 1 Assume the cover depth is 1.5m

We1= W'c1+Wcsu1= 124.94 Kn/m 7a)

3. Calculate the Bedding Factor Fm

According to the formula mentioned in the BS-EN-1295 NA.4.2, the bedding factor Fm should be calculated as the follow:
Fm We x Fse / Wt 8)

Where:
Fm-Bedding Factor
Fse-The safety factor for rigid pipe material (External load design)
Wt-Crushing strength of rigid pipe (Maximum load for concrete pipe)

According to the table NA.5 Minimum safety factor of Fse and Fsi as shown below:

The Fse= 1.25

According to the pipe testing report, the Maximum load applied of the NP3 pipe is 85.1 Kn/m
Wt= 85.1 Kn/m

By using formula 8

Scenario 1 Assume the cover depth is 1.5m

Fm1 We x Fse / Wt 1.84

The bedding type can be obtained by check the table NA.7 Rigid Pipe Embeddments as shown below, for the secnario1, the Fm
values are 1.84, the embedment type are "B". Based on the BS-EN-1295 and Design Manual for Roads and Bridges Volume 4
Section 2, the sketch of the rigid pipe bedding.
