Chevra Chesed Committee
In the last number of years, CCC volunteers have
prepared baskets or platters with holiday-appro-
priate delicacies for our members to enjoy. This
year, co-chairs Pearl Rothenberg and Halina Halp-
ern decided to do something different for Passover.
Thirty beautiful orchid plants with blooms of different
colours, were hand delivered to our CCC members
in residences, hospital, and at home. The members
were both surprised and delighted to receive these
flowering plants with instructions for their care. With
proper care, orchids can last for many years. Per-
sonally delivering the orchids to our members was
very gratifying for our volunteers. Both the giving
and the receiving are important components of the
circle of Chesed.
The CCC has received several notes and phone
calls from our members. They have expressed
their appreciation for being remembered and for to spend some quality time with each person.

The Meaning of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

Rosh Hashanah literally means “Head of the Year”
in Hebrew. It falls in the month of Tishrei, which is
the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar. The
reason for this is because the Hebrew calendar
begins with the month of Nissan (when it's believed
the Jews were freed from slavery in Egypt) but the
month of Tishrei is believed to be the month in
which G-d created the world. Hence, another way
to think about Rosh Hashanah is as the birthday of leading up to them) Jews embark upon the serious

the Megillah (Book of Esther) is read that night. If
one is feeling weak, one may break the fast after

“In Esther 4:16 she agrees to see the king uninvited,

and asks the Jewish People to fast for three days
beforehand. Why did she call for a fast? Because
a fast helps to lower the volume on our physical
pursuits in order to focus more acutely on our spiri-
tual selves. This facilitates the process of "teshuva"
- literally "return." We return to our essential state
of purity.

Esther called for a fast, knowing that through

soul-searching the Jews would forge a spiritual con-
nection necessary to make her mission successful.
And it paid off!” reads an unknown source.

Farewell Snowbirds,
Safe travels!
It's that time of the year again
when our snowbirds leave for
their winter nesting grounds in
warmer climates. We wish each
and every one of them, a safe
trip and good health over their
winter respite and look forward
to seeing them in the spring.

Yidlife Crisis –
An Evening Of
Unleavened Comedy
For this year’s Annual Passover Gala The Chevra
presented an evening of ‘unleavened’ laughter
featuring the comedy duo of Jamie Elman and
Eli Batalion also known YidLife Crisis! Filled with
endless humour about Jewish Montreal, they
presented their take on a typical Passover Seder
that really ‘hit the nail on the head’.
The surprise of the night was our very own Rabbi
Asher Jacobson, who never turns down a good
challenge, agreeing to perform an eighteen
minute stand-up routine for the over 300 guests
that filled the room. If successful, $1,800 would
be donated to the shul by two of our congre-
gants.
For close to 25 minutes, The Rabbi, known for
his often entertaining sermons, had everybody
in stitches as his one liners and hilarious anec-
dotes had everybody laughing all the way home!
He was a colossal hit and had everybody want-
ing more!!
The evening, which was chaired by long-time
member and Vice-President, Kathy Halmi,
began with a delicious VIP Passover buffet, an
open bar and a meet and greet with the YidLife
boys.
We’d like to thank all our sponsors for their sup-
port and generosity and the Synagogue staff
and volunteers who helped make our evening
of comedy a great success!

See you next year!

Shabbat Under The Stars
On Friday, June 15, 2018, the town of Hamp-
stead and the The Chevra Synagogue, for
the fifth year, hosted a spectacular Shabbat
celebration and dinner in Hampstead Park.
The overwhelming response to our com-
munity Shabbat brought 1700 people to the
venue.
The beautiful, warm summer weather allowed
our guests to mingle outside, while enjoying
a festive BBQ, music, an open bar, a spe-
cial candle lighting ceremony and Kabbalat
Shabbat services outside.
A spectacular tent, was put up in the football
field where the guests were served a deli-
cious four course dinner, prepared by L’Or-
chidée Catering.
It was a spectacular evening that will be
remembered by all!
Thank you to Mayor William Steinberg and
the City of Hampstead for a spectacular eve-
ning “under the stars”, to all our sponsors, the
Chevra staff and all our amazing volunteers.
It is because of your commitment and sup-
port the evening was a great success!

See you next year…“Under The Stars!”

On Monday, August 6, 2018 The
Chevra hosted our annual Golf
Tournament at the beautiful Fon-
tainebleau Golf Course in Blainville.
With the help of our many generous
sponsors, golfers and volunteers it
was a great day of golf, gab and
gastronomy.
Even though all the details of the
day were ‘ironed’ out to a ‘tee’
Mother Nature’s rainy weather did
not put a damper on our spirit, as
our foursomes, rain gear and all,
ventured out onto the course for a
round of golf.
With the help of L’Orchidée Catering
and Elan Bar Service, our energy
was kept up with a delicious break-
fast, a yummy BBQ lunch, and an
amazing buffet dinner with food for
every taste.
The festivities were concluded
with a silent and live auction with
lots of amazing gifts - everyone
had a ‘ball!’
The planning for next year’s golf
tournament is already in the works,
when we look forward to having
some ‘fun in the sun!’
A special thanks to all our spon-
sors, donors, golfers and volun-
teers and committee members
who helped make this event a tre-
mendous success.
