Balcar A1200, A 2400 and A'5000 flash units offer a great number of possibilities. = Individual continuous control ofthe light intensity of the model lemp of each lighthead. = Each lighthead circuit can be turned on and off separately without having to plug and un- plug each head and when the power selector mode Switch is in the SEP. position, you do ‘his without changing the power discharged in the other lighthead. You do this simply by tuning the ingividuel moael veriators to the off position. ~The power going to eesh lighthead can be changed by using the three position power selector mode switeh The continuous flash veriator permits you to vary continuously in a 1 to 4 ratio the flash ‘output without changing the ratio going to each of the three lightheads. Power output selector . Particuleretvention should be paid to the following information. This spacial Pewer Selector ‘Switch permits you to have aither symetrical or asymmetrical (ratio) light output going to your ightheads. 11,4720 and A2a0 ‘Thacable below shows you the different possibilities (symetricel and asymetricall which you can obtain when using the A200 power pack with the Continuous Flash Variator in the ‘maximum position (9. By plugging it in Both channel A and B. it ellows you to {get from 300 to 5000 joules using both the Continuous Flash Variator andthe Power Selec- tor Mode Switeh Using the continuous modelling lamp variators ‘These permit you to vary the ratio cf che model lamp of each lightheed in direct proportion «with the amour? of power being discharged in each head. For example: with the A 1200 power pack and the power selector made switch in the SEP. (eparatel position and with three lightheads, ‘600 ‘model variator on 4 8300 model variator on V2 300 ‘model variator on V/2 ‘To turn off the madel lamp af each lighthead, without turning aff che flash, simply turn the model variator towards point °O” If yau wish algo to ture Of che flash power going ta the same lighthead (without heving to unplug che lightheed), simply turn the same vaniator buttan completely unti it clicks oft in the “off” position Using the continuous flash variator ‘This aided control permits you to raise or lower continuously the flash output — without ‘modifying the ratio chosen by the power selector made switen. Ie permits you ta Tine tune the power to correspand exactly with the f-stop of your lens. For example: if yaur continuous flash variator is in tha "1" position and your flashmeter reads 22 2/3 and you wish to work at 22. ‘Simply turn the flash variatar counter clockwise until you abtsin the Fstop reading you wish, ‘This continuous and progressive variation is particularly useful with madium and small size format cameras with cick stops having na intermediary position, You, therefore, now have the possibility of setting the power of your flash unit(s) to that of your lens opening rather than vice-versa. IMPORTANT ‘When reducing the power of the flash unit by using the continuous flash variator you must “dump” the previous power in the unit. This is easily done by flashing off the flash by using the open flash button, However, wren raising the power: there is no need to do this, ‘By using born che Continuous Flash Variator ond the Bawer Selector Mode Switch, you vary the ight output of one lighthiad from 75 to T200 joules with the A 1200 and from 150 £0 2400 joules with A 2400 joule uni. Rapid/slow charge switch ‘The normal position of this switch is i the rapid position Mew. However. from time to time you may find necessary or best to use the unit in the slow charge @. in order to draw lens surge current from the AC line input. In rapid charge the maximum surge current is 7 A in 220 Vand 14 A in TIO V. On slow charge this is reduced to about 2 & on 220 Vand 4 A an TIO V. ‘Also the slow charge position is often used ta reform the flash condensers should the flash tunit have been unused for a long panod of time, Caution: ic is preferable to switch the charging time switch from slow to rapid when the flash unit is off or completely charged Photocell “SLAVE” triggering Each flash unit has @ built-in, ultra-sensitive transister amplified photocell trigger eineuit Uihich is used to fire the flash unit in perfect synchronisation with another flash wienout use of trigger wires. f you wish this photocell to function, simply push the swisch ta "ON". Ina normal studio, t suffices to turn the photocell switch on. But if yau use your flashes with Gnié-Spats, SP8O or Episcope, your photocell may not receive enough light to trigger the fash. In that case, t’s preferable to plug your synchra cord into another flash (ia low power) and ‘tose this flash to trigger the others. Individual neon charge indicators Three separate neon indicators permit yau to see if each channel is charged or discharged, For example, when the power selector mode switch is in the SEP. (separate) position and three lightheads are used, you can check individually whether each lighthead is working correctly simply by seeing whether or not each neon gaes out when the flash is discharged, Synchro “X” plug Each itis delivered with a 5 m (16 ft} “Jack” synchro edeptor (code 1098) and a 6 m(20't) “ack” extension cord (code 110) Open flash “TEST” pushbutton and 100% neon charge indicator When your unit is fully charged to its chosen power, this neon indicator wil light up if your flash unic has nor been used for some tie, the nean indicatar may blink on and oft several times before stabilising NOTE: st the same time, you will also hesr the vottage-stablisation relays clicking, This is nnenmal and indicates that the unit is charging correctly The universal “U” lighthead ‘The Balcar Universal "U" head isthe versatile heart of the Balear aystem, Nearly all Balear accessories re made tofit on this head which includes a GO mm parabolic reflector. Each "U' lighthead is delivered with its pantitt removable base (code 137*) RES* and the DISK" reflector (code GOBdl. The ABS" reflector takes all accessories (Barndoors, Grid spots, titers, ciffusers, LB 61, LB BO, ight boxes, atc... The DISK reflector has @ dual purpose ‘assures a uniform light with umbrellas, and when used with 3° and 10° Grid-Spots, gives a smaller diameter with practically no light. reduction, Ta do this, one places the “CISK reflector (with ts shiny side towards the light) inside the @ 18 om reflactor and one puts the Grig-Spot over it (see photo) All the 1200, A 2400 and A S000 mode's use the same “U" head. This is powerfully ven tilaced and the fan stays on whatever position the lamp variatoris on. The "U"head isnarmally furnished with a long quarteflashtube with aU" shape (code 104u) and a halogen 250 W lamp (eode 654). If you want. a shorter flash duration, you can use the short “U" flashtube [code 1048) which obliges you to use the 150 W halogen mode lamp (code 654) ¥ iy 1378 Replacing the flashtube and model lamp ‘The quartz flashtubes 3000 J. (code 104u) used in the Balear “U" lightheads have excep- tional stability and long life, However, Fit becomes necessary to change them, do as follows. caution: 1 Unplug the ightheed, 2) Remove the pyrex shell ube protector by pulling firmly anit 8) Take care not ta touch the tube with your bare fingers as you pul it from its socket. 4} You can now unscrew the halogen lamp, taking care not to touch it with bare fingers. The synchro metal yoke is adjustable in height depending on whether you use a short or long flashtube. '5) Before putting back a flaahtube In the lighthead make certain that both metal leads are perfectly straigne, atherwise you may bresk the tube while inserting the metal leads into {he two holders, 6) Place the 2 leads carefully in the two holders and push firmly in order to seat the tube nits base, pushing uns the U position af the tube touches the madel lamp. IMPORTANT: the BALCAR “U'" Lightheads use extremely long life (000 to 2000 hours), high quality frosted 120 V halogen lamps either 250 W (cade 654) ar 150 W (code 654a). Ifyou have to change the lamp after litte use, chances are thet it received a physical shock while It, causing the spirals of the filament to short-circult against each other. The halogen pencil lighthead The BALCAR Halogen Pencil Light itself has no reflector and its ight source is a bere tube. Iisa lighthead with a thousand and one uses, Iis equipped with a 2600 J. (code 10s) quartz flashtube and @ 150 W (cade 654a) quartz hhalagen mode! lamp which permits you to see the exact effect obtained, CAUTION: never put @ 250 Wiamp in place of it You can 1) convert it to RINGLIGHT by using the RINGLIGHT ADAPTOR (code 608) 2) use it with normal reflectors and umbrellas by using the Reflector Adaptor (cade 137c), 3) make itarientable by Fixing i on the PANTILT (code 1371). ‘When the flashtube is aimed dawnwards, tao much heat can accumulate fram the modeling lamp causing the bimetal thermo protector switen to cut off the modeling temporary. This ‘can be avoided by reducing the variatar of the modelling lamp, S 137 Fuses Your flash units A1200 and 2400 as well as the “U" lighthead are all protected by one ‘ype of fuse 4 A. The ASQOD is protestad by a 8 A fuse. Should it be necessary to change them, make sure that you use the seme type. The dimen- sions of these fuses are: 6x 20 mm (except for USA), “Two spare fuses are placed under the handle of the power pack. Important advice ~ Do not leave your flash unit unused for a long periad of time.
