1. General Guidelines
1. A school team should comprise of 2 or 3 students and 1 teacher.
2. Eligible age group: 7 to 10 (1 Jan 2008 – 31 Dec 2012)
3. All rules and regulations are subject to change without prior notice.

2. Introduction
Nearly 800 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. Still, about a third of the world’s
food production is never eaten. E.g. apples are not collected on farms because the apples
look odd or imperfect. But such apples could be used to produce apple juice.

This year, the challenge is to make a robot that can help collect and sort fruit and bring the
“perfect” fruit (shown as red apples) to a grocery store and the ugly fruit (shown as blue
apples) to a juice factory:

3. Games Description
The WeDo Regular Challenge is for each team to build and program a WeDo 2.0 robot that
the team can use to complete a series of tasks within a Game Table. The tasks are to collect
and sort four pieces of fruit placed on a Game Mat and transport the fruits to different
locations depending on their appearance. Each team will use their robot to perform the tasks
within 2 minutes.

On the game field:

• There are four green squares represent the Home Areas.

• The four white squares surrounded by black lines are the Farm Fields where the
fruits are grown.
• The two red squares are the two Grocery Stores
• The two blue squares are the two Juice Factories.
• The green circle is the Finish Area.

Game Objects:

On the game field, there are two kinds of fruit: “perfect” fruit and “ugly” fruit. The two different
kinds of fruits are represented by two different colour of LEGO bricks:

One Perfect fruit is placed oriented in the middle of upper left Farm Field and the other
Perfect fruit is placed in the lower right Farm Field:

Game Tasks:

The robot must start from within one of the Home Areas, inside the green line and should
finish in the Finish Area in the middle of the game field.

During the competition, each team will use their robot to:

• Collect the four pieces of fruit from the four Farm Fields.
• Transport the two pieces of perfect fruit to either of the two Grocery Stores.
• Transport the two pieces of ugly fruit to either of the two Juices Factories.

4. Game Rules
Material and Robot

1. The smarthubs, motors and sensors used to assemble the WeDo robot must be from
the 45300 LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 Core Set. Any number and combination of
smart hubs, motors and sensors are allowed. Any LEGO branded non-electronic
elements can be used in the construction of the robot.
2. Only one WeDo robot is allowed at the Game Table during an attempt to solve the
challenge.
3. The maximum dimensions of the robot before it starts must be within
250mmx250mmx250mm. After the robot starts, the dimensions of the robot are not
restricted.
4. Batteries used during competition can be 2 pieces of AA batteries or smarthub
rechargeable battery of LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0.
5. All parts of the robot should be in the initial states (not pre-built) when the assembling
time starts. For example, a tire cannot be put on a wheel until the assembling time
begins.
6. Contestants may not refer to any instruction sheets/guides in any form including
written, illustrated or pictorial.
7. Teams are allowed to pre-program the robot before the competition.

Competition

8. The competition consists of 2 rounds.

9. Assembly times for Round 1 is 120 minutes and maintenance time for Round 2 is 30
minutes.
10. If a violation is found at the inspection, the judge will give the team 3 minutes to
correct the violation. If the violation is not corrected during the time given, teams will
not be allowed to compete.

Rules of the challenge

11. Before each attempt, the four pieces of fruit are placed in the four Farm Fields.
12. The robot must start an attempt from within one of the Home Areas, inside the green
line.
13. During the attempt, the robot may be moved/ operated under programmed control
autonomously or under remote control, or using a combination of the two methods.
14. The four pieces of fruit must be moved away from their Farm Fields by the robot.

15. A piece of fruit is correctly placed in a red or blue square if it is completely within the
square that matches its colour.

16. When a piece of fruit is completely within a Home Area, a team is allowed to pick up
the fruit manually and place it on the robot before moving into red or blue square.

17. During an attempt, it is allowed to touch the robot when the robot is completely within
a Home Area. A team may do this either to reposition the robot within the area or to
attach or detach appendages.
18. During an attempt, a team is:

• Not allowed to touch the fruit unless they are within a Home Area
• Not allowed to touch the robot unless the robot is within a Home Area.

19. The mission is completed when either:

• The robot moves to the Finish Area, stops, the chassis of the robot is
completely within the Finish Area (cables are allowed to be outside of the
Finish Area) and the team communicates to the judges that the robot has
finished.
• The 2-minute time limit has expired.
• A team touched:

i. A fruit outside of Home Areas

ii. A robot outside of Home Areas.
