Jane Goodall is a world-renowned anthropologist. She was born on 3 April 1934 in London. She is
known for studying chimpanzees in the wild.
As a young woman, Jane visited her friend who lived on a farm in Kenya. She loved the country so
much, she decided to stay. While she was there, she got a job studying chimpanzees. Then, she moved to
Tanzania. There, she worked in Gombe Stream National Park and observed chimpanzees.
When Jane first began to study chimpanzees, she had her own way of observing chimpanzees and
recording their behaviour. She spent 40 years doing that and learnt many interesting things about
chimpanzees. She learnt that chimpanzees use tools. She observed them using a blade of grass to catch
termites in a hole. She also saw them remove leaves from twigs to make the branch a tool. Another
interesting behaviour she discovered was that chimpanzees hunt in packs to trap animals and kill them for
meat. Before this, people thought that they were herbivores. Jane also observed that chimpanzees have
different personalities - some are kind, generous while others can be aggressive - and show emotions such
as anger or joy.
Later on, Jane spent many years protecting the chimpanzees and preserving their habitats. She also
wrote articles and books about her experience with chimpanzees, and won many awards too.

There are many scenic waterfalls and lakes in the district of Air Jernih:
Seurut
To reach Seurut, take a 20-minute boat ride from Jati Jetty. Listen to the loud roars of the water
that falls into a flat and sandy area at the ground level. This area makes a perfect spot for
picnics. Many families with children come here early to get the best picnic spot. But this place
lacks dustbins.
Sembat
The water flows swiftly over a few slopes with rocks. It is popular among those who like
camping. There is a large area for setting up the tents.
Sebewah
There are a few good fishing spots around the huge lake. It is usually very crowded during
weekends and public holidays. Please take note that those who want to fish here must pay a fee
of RM10.00 to the Wildlife Department. Many species of freshwater fish are found here.

QUESTION 4

Day:………………………… Date:_____________
Dear Jeffery,

Last weekend, a group of Environment Club members went on a camping trip. I was very excited
to go on the four-day, three-night stay with my fellow members.
Our first day was spent hiking through a jungle trail. We came to a stream but it was in a poor
state. There was a lot of rubbish stuck along the bank. We picked up as much rubbish as we could find.
After that, we hiked back to the campsite to wash up and have lunch.
The following day, we visited an orang asli village. We helped the villagers to harvest fruits and
vegetables in their farm. We also went on a fishing trip with some of the villagers. They gave us a few
tips to catch fish. When we returned to the village, we had lunch together with the villagers. We also
got a chance to eat the fish that the villagers had caught earlier.
On our third day, we went fishing. We used the tips we learnt from the villagers the day before.
We did not catch as many but we caught enough for our lunch. We were then divided into groups. We
built our own campfire and cooked the fish. After lunch and a short rest, we went on a 20-minute hike
to a waterfall. The waterfall was picturesque. The falling water created a beautiful mist. We swam in
the cool water until it was time to return to the campsite.
On our last day, we went tree-climbing. We took turns climbing a rope ladder to a wooden
platform. The platform was built on a tall, sturdy tree. We got a bird's eye view of our surroundings.
We reminisced about the things we did on the trip. Then, we returned to our campsite to pack.
I had a lot of fun and gained many new experiences which I will cherish. Bye.

Your friend,
YAZRI

Talking about monkeys! Some would love to have monkeys as pets while others irks the
idea of having a monkey around! It all depends on how you look at a monkey. In fact a monkey
can be an adorable animal yet a nuisance to have in the house too. Imagine a monkey jumping
from one end of the house to another or stealing your food and other belongings. In general
monkeys are regarded as intelligent and highly sociable animals.
A monkey is a primate that belongs to the suborder of Haplorrhini. There are around 260
species in the world. The length of the monkey ranges from 140-160 mm including the tail.
They weigh about 120-140 grams. There are some species that are one meter long weighing
about 35 kilograms. Monkeys are usually classified into two groups, the Old World Monkeys
found in Africa and Asia and the New World Monkeys found in South America. Most monkeys
are tree dwellers while some of them live on ground. Most monkeys live on seeds, flowers,
eggs, fruits, leaves, nuts and small insects including spiders. The monkey's tail helps them to
swing and walk easily on trees.
There are many species of monkeys. The most prominent is the spider monkey, so called
because of its long tail and spidery limbs. They are adept to walk on two legs across tree tops.
Those with extremely huge nose are called proboscis. This type of monkey lives on the south
of the continent of Australia and the island of Borneo.

Deforestation in Malaysia

Malaysia is ranked as the 21st most biodiverse country in the world, with 2,199 endemic species of
animals. Unfortunately, 18% of these species are listed as "threatened". If Malaysia does not protect
them, they will become extinct.

Animals are not the only ones to be affected. The indigenous people of Malaysia depend on the
rainforest for medicine, shelter, and food. The destruction of the rainforest in Malaysia will damage
their traditional ways of life and the loss of their culture.

Logging deep in the jungle also affects cities and towns that are far away. This is because there are
less forested areas to soak up rainwater. Due to this, floods in cities and towns become more
common, which can result in the loss of life and damage to properties such as homes, roads, schools
and many more.

Organisations such as the Malaysian Nature Society and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia
also known as, FRIM, are actively promoting the conservation of Malaysia's forest and conducting
research on methods to protect and conserve Malaysia's forest. Without such organisations, it
would not be long before the forests are completely lost.

QUESTION 1

Read the story below.

Two best friends, Sam and Jason, met with an accident on their way to Boston City. The
following morning, Sam woke up blind and Jason was still unconscious. Dr Berkeley was
standing at his bedside looking at his health chart and medications with a thoughtful
expression on his face. When he saw Sam awake, he beamed at him and asked, "How
are you feeling today Sam?"
Sam tried to put up a brave face and smiled back saying, "Absolutely wonderful,
Doctor. I am very grateful for all that you have done for me." Dr Berkeley was moved
by Sam's deed. All that he could say was, "You are a very brave man, Sam, and God will
make it up to you in one way or another."
While he was moving on to the next patient, Sam called back at him almost
pleading, "Promise me you won't tell Jason anything."
"You know I won't do that. Trust me," said Dr Berkeley and walked away. "Thank
you," whispered Sam.
Months later when Jason had recovered considerably, he stopped hanging out
with Sam. He felt discouraged and embarrassed to spend time with a disabled person

like Sam. Sam felt lonely since he didn't have anybody else other than Jason to count
on. Things went from bad to worse.

One day, Sam died with great sadness. When Jason was called on his burial, he
found a letter waiting for him. Dr Berkeley gave it to him with an expressionless face
and said, "This is for you, Jason. Sam had asked me to give it to you when he was
gone."
In the letter, Sam had said, "Dear Jason, I have kept my promise in the end to
lend you my eyes if anything had happened to them. Now, there is nothing more that I
can ask from God, than the fact that you will see the world through my eyes. You will
always be my best friend Sam."

QUESTION 2

Read the email below.

Hello Shamsul,

I was surprised to receive an email from you with the title 'Boarding school'. I didn't know you were
interested in attending a boarding school. Studying in boarding school is like living in your school. It can
be a wonderful experience if you can enjoy all it has to offer. When you are at a boarding school, there
will be time to attend classes and participate in co-curricular activities. There are prayers, meals and
sleep time too.

There are many good reasons to study in a boarding school. I was eager to go because I used to
listen to stories about my father and uncle's school days in their boarding school. I found their
experience interesting and exciting.

Boarding schools have a reputation for academic excellence. You will have the opportunity to
maintain excellence in your studies. Since you are living in your school, there is more time for the
teachers to conduct extra lessons or enrichment programmes in the evening.

Getting into a boarding school is not easy. It is very competitive, Shamsul. They only accept the
best so when you get into the school you will be living among motivated high achievers. Your school
mates will motivate and inspire you to work hard and aim high. This is a confidence booster and will help
you prepare for tackling obstacles in life.

Living in a boarding school can be tough too. It can be a little frightening being away from your
family and home. You may cry in the beginning. I have to admit I did too but soon I made friends. It was
not so bad after that. A few months after that, boarding school felt like my second home and my school
mates and teachers my second family.

I think you should apply to go to a boarding school, Shamsul. It will be a life- changing
experience. I'll be happy to answer more questions you have about studying in a boarding school so feel
free to email me.

Your cousin,

Isham

QUESTION 4
The Wise Old Man
A wealthy man had a son. The son, used to growing up in rich circumstances,
started to have some bad habits. He was a good student and studied hard. The father
was confident that he would be successful in life. Yet, he was worried about the bad
habits like smoking and drinking that he had.

There was a wise old man who lived just outside their village. The rich man
approached the wise old man and told him about his son's habits. He asked him to help
the boy get over his bad habits.

Upon the fathers request, the son went to meet the wise old man. When the boy
reached the old man's house, he found the old man walking about in his garden.
After introducing himself, he waited to see how the old man was going to force him
to change his habits. To his surprise, the old man pointed out a tiny plant growing
in the ground. He asked him to pull it out. The boy easily pulled it out with just his
forefinger and thumb.

When he waited triumphantly for his next task, the old man pointed to a slightly
bigger plant. This time, the boy pulled it out by grasping the plant with a single palm.
After that came a bigger bush. The boy managed to pull it out using both hands. The
wise old man next pointed to a guava tree and asked the boy to pull it out. The boy
remonstrated. He declared that it was impossible to pull it out as it was already a
small tree.

The wise old man then sat down and started to talk. He explained that the plants
were all like his bad habits. The longer the habits were not dealt with, the larger and
stronger they would become. Once they have reached a certain stage, it would be
impossible to remove them.

The wise man then pointed out that only the boy could remove them. Nobody,
however old or wise, could remove them from the boy. It was up to the boy himself
to remove them. The old man explained, "Your father thinks that because I am old
I am wise and will find a way to help you. Always remember this, only you can help
yourself!"

The boy said, "But grandpa, all my friends smoke and drink. I will lose my friends if I
change my habits."

The wise old man said, "If they insist that you must smoke and drink to be their
friend, then they are not worth being your friend. People who do not respect your
values will never make good friends. They are not good for you. Your father says that
you are a bright student. When you have the right values you will succeed. When you
are successful, you will find other friends who are successful. You will find that most
of your present friends will not be as successful as you. Just as a good cup of tea is
made with the right mix, success is made by mixing with the right people. Your habits
are like those small plants that you easily pulled out. Pull them out now. Don't delay.
Remember, only you can do it!"

QUESTION 5

Time management refers to the way we organize and plan the time we spend on
specific activities. There are many benefits to understand and learning time management.
The objective of time management is to increase effectiveness, efficiency and
productivity. Besides, we get a better professional reputation and experience less stress.

A lack of time management has many undesirable consequences. We can miss deadlines,
have inefficient work flow, poor quality of work and a poor professional reputation.
Besides, because of all these negatives, we may also have higher stress levels.
There are five specific skills that students need to develop to be able to manage their
time well. Practice makes perfect. As long as the student is diligent in sticking to his
schedule, he will be able to have good time management.

1. The ability to say no

It is important to be able to say no when invitations to friendly outings will intrude on
one's time set aside for studies or revision. In school friendship, a simple trip for pizza
can turn into several hours of just hanging out.

2. Spacing things out

This means doing things without delay. If there is an exam in two months, revisions should
be started today. This can mean doing at least two revisions before the exam day is here.
Even when there is no exam near, revisions should be programmed into one's study time-
table.

3. Use social time wisely

Study time must be programmed to set aside sufficient hours for socializing. Just hanging
out with friends without playing games is also an important part of overall development.

4. Checking priorities again and again

Life is full of twists and turns. Even the best programme of time management can be
turned totally upside down by unforeseen events. Changes must be made to one's schedule
to adjust well to drastic changes that happen.

5. Health, sleep and exercise

Any good programme for time management must include a minimum schedule for physical
exertion as well as physical rest. To stay healthy, it is also important to have an intelligent
diet. This does not mean avoiding bad eating habits only. It also means that we must be
aware of our diet.

Nearly every successful student will have definite study patterns. Those who have regular
study schedules will be surprised that without knowing it they have been following the
principles of time management.

QUESTION 6

In 1999, Putrajaya, which spans an area of 5000 hectares, was launched as the new administrative
capital of the Malaysian Federal Government. It is located 25 km south of Kuala Lumpur, the previous
administrative capital, which was found to be overcrowded and congested.

Putrajaya has become a tourist attraction and tourists are spoilt for choice as this modern city has so
much to offer. There are a number of grand government buildings, mosques such as the Putra
Mosque, palaces and monuments such as the Millennium Monument, spectacular bridges which are
illuminated with changing coloured lights at night, lakes and of course the numerous nature parks. It
also has luxurious hotels, such as the Putrajaya Shangri-La and other five-star hotels.

The Perdana Putra which houses the office complex of the Prime Minister of Malaysia is one such
tourist attraction. Located on the main hill in Putrajaya, the Perdana Putra has become synonymous
with the executive branch of the Malaysian federal government.

Another tourist attraction is the Natural History Museum which was opened to the public in 2010. A
visit to this museum would be like an experience out of a fantasy-adventure comedy film A Night at
the Museum because of the displays of specimens of mammals, birds, insects, sea creatures and
special insects. Other exhibits in the museum include herbal plants, a collection of gems, fossils, rocks
and even a rock fragment from the moon taken during the last Apollo expedition. This museum has
also become a centre for research and study. The moment you step into this museum you will be
captivated by the white skeleton of a 12m-long Bryde's whale situated at the entrance of the ground
floor exhibition area.

For those who enjoy shopping, Putrajaya's Alamanda Mall provides exciting brands to choose from, a
