MAINTENANCE OF 24KV BUS DUCT
Document No: SMP / ELE – 06

Rev No-02
Filed At: Elect. Maintenance Main Plant

The purpose of the SMP - Maintenance of 24 KV bus duct is to train and

guide maintenance personnel to ensure safe and efficient maintenance of the
system.

Responsibility: Team Leader, Electrical Maintenance

Other Department To Be Intimated: (Main Plant Operation)

Details of Hazard Involved

1. Electrical shock
2. Falling from height
3. Exposure to dust
4. Suffocation due to inadequate air

Safety Precaution Required

1. Use of safety glass, hand gloves and dust mask are mandatory with other
general PPEs.
2. All isolations are to be made as in isolation procedure.
3. Discharge of stored charge with the help of discharge rod.

4. Insulating gloves of 11 / 33 KV grade is to be used.
5. Spanners while opening PT links at SPVT cubicle / Generator links at
10mtr below generator should be tied to the hand.
6. Hand gloves to be used through out the total work to avoid mechanical
injury.
7. Scaffoldings to be made below seal off bushings near GT, seal off
bushings near TG wall, out side wall below bus duct & below generator
at 10mtr link cover.
8. Use safety belts while working at height. Follow work at height
procedure (EM 4/31).
9. Oxygen level is to be measured inside bus duct before any maintenance
work inside bus duct.
10. Put the safety signboard “ CONFINES SPACE – MEN AT WORK ”
near the manhole entry.
11. Compressed air pipe to be put inside bus duct to avoid suffocation.
12. Avoid continuous working while working inside the bus duct.
13. Sufficient illumination inside the bus duct.
Permit Type: Permit To Work Order / Working At Height / Confined Space
Permit.
Permit Approving Authority: Shift in charge (Main Control Room)

Isolation procedure

1. 220 KV GCB DC OFF & locked.

2. Isolators 29A, 29B, 29C, 29D open.
3. Scaffolding materials.
4. Earth switches 29E1, 29E2, 29E3 closed.
5. 6.6KV unit incoming breakers US1A/US1B/US2A/US2B in test &
locked.

6. Generator is on barring gear.
7. Field flashing 415V supply OFF & locked.
8. Regulation 415V supply OFF & locked.
9. Field breaker in Open condition its DC supply off.

T & P including special ones

1. General T & P
2. 5KV electronic/Motorised Megger
3. Source of 220V supply.
4. Healthy discharge rod.
5. Insulated spanners of specified type.
6. Insulated gloves of 11/33KV grade
7. Cotton hand gloves.
8. Safety belts.
9. Oxygen measuring instrument for measurement of oxygen.
10. Instrument for measurement of toxic gases (CO, CO2 etc)

Frequency of maintenance: Yearly once

WORK INSTRUCTION PROCEDURE

1. Take PTW.
2. Ensure generator is on barring gear.
3. Open the SPVT bellow cover.
4. Clamp the discharge rod to ground making it ready to use
5. Discharge the stored energy from generator by touching generator phase
side link terminal by discharge rod.
6. Open the Excitation transformer door.
7. Make temporary earthing of the system by connecting discharge rod in
transformer links.

8. Open the SPVT links from bottom.
9. Open NGT cubicle door. Open NGT link from top.
10. Open the generator link terminal box cover (phase side) of all the three
phases.
11. Open the generator phase side links from top ensuring supply of air &
adequate light (24volts) inside bus duct during work.
12. Open the generator link terminal box cover (neutral side) of all the three
phases.
13. Open the generator neutral side links from top ensuring supply of air &
adequate light (24volts) inside bus duct.
14. Take 5 KV electronic megger.
15. Take the megger reading of bus duct & confirm the IR value of bus duct.
16. If the megger value of bus duct is LOW, drying of bus duct to be carried
out by blowing hot air inside the bus duct till desired IR value of is
achieved.
17. If IR value is still low to check individual sections open the links of GT
LV side and near TG wall seal off bushing.
18. Find the section of bus duct where IR value is low.
19. Remove each insulators of each section. Inspect and measure IR value of
each insulator & refit the insulators.
20. Replace the damaged/low IR value insulator.
21. Inspect the generators seal off bushings.
22. Replace the damaged/low IR value seal off bushings.
23. After the desired IR value of all the sections achieved reconnect the links.
24. Reconnect the GT LV side links & links near TG wall seal off bushing.
25. Reconnect the generator phase & neutral side links tightly & close phase
& neutral side terminal box cover.
