1. WORKING PRINCIPLE
These devices are used for level detection. The conical tip of the sensor ensures
really precise on-off performance level sensing. Its reaction is independent of
various physical parameters of the liquid such as density, dielectric constant,
conductivity, colour or refractive index. This allows the use for safe level switching
as well as for precise level control applications. If there is any foam you even can
decide whether to use the sensor for foam level or liquid level control, suppressing
the influence of foam on switching.
If the sensor is supplied with a U-tip, it is able to sense changes in refractive
index. So it can be used for example as an interface level switch for liquids.

3. PUTTING INTO OPERATION

It is recommended to check all parts for visible defects while unpacking. Before
installation it is useful to check all functions. For this purpose the devices are
connected temporarily, then the sensor can be tested by dipping the sensor tip
into a glass with liquid (note chapter 4.2 for calibration).Electrical connections
have to be done only by technical personnel by taking into account the local
regulations.

3.1 Mechanical installation of the Transducers

After final installation the sensor tip must not be less than 10 mm from any
opposite surface. This may vary in respect of shape and surface properties of this
surface.

One-piece Transducer - use a -screwed pipe e. g. G12S with thread

Type 720.0032: G 1/2 A to screw into a union

One-piece Transducer - use the appropriate glass connection

Type 720.0042:

3.3 Electrical connection of Transducer and Controller

Transducer and Controller connections are coded at the screw terminals with the
colours WS (white) rsp. 2d, BR (brown) rsp. 4d and GN (green) rsp. 6d.
It is not necessary to use shielded cables, but you should avoid laying wires near
strong EMI-sources. The maximum wiring distance and wiring resistance are
shown by following table:

wire cross section wiring distance wiring resistance

[mm2] [m] [Ω]
0,5 175 6,3
0,75 300 7,2
1,0 400 7,2
1,5 600 7,2
Tab. 2
Do not exceed a total resistance of 9Ω incl. Contact resistance, otherwise the
controller will be non-permissive and indicate FAILURE.
For Ex-instrumentation you also have to consider the max. Inductance of La ≤0,5
mH and max. Capacity of Ca ≤380 nF.

3.4 Mains connection

First you should check if power supply Voltage of mains and controller are the
same. This can be done by checking the printing on the pc-board as follows:.

220 V ∼ 720.X602X1000.0250
24 V ∼ 720.X602X3000.0250
24 V = 720.X602X4000.0250
24 V = without transformer 720.1602X7000.0250

The version with a housing additionally is marked at the screw terminal block
"NETZ" with the voltage for power supply and wiring hints. For wiring see Fig. 18.
The connectors of the 19” plug-in module are to be wired as follows:
d 28 (c28) = N (-)
d 30 (c30) = L (+)
d 32 (c32) = earth

3.5 Connection of Relays

A separate relay with SPDT-contacts for "SIGNAL" and "STÖRUNG (FAILURE)"

may be used. These are potential free and so can be used for any application.
The version with a housing is marked with the connection scheme.

The connector of the 19” plug-in module are to be connected as follows:

Tab. 3

3.6 Function test

After checking the complete wiring, the power supply can be switched on. One of
the green LEDs should flash up now. Switch off S2 (signal delay off!) and push
and hold button "TEST”. One of the two green LEDs should be on for about 1
second and after that it changes to the other green LED which starts to flash as
long as the TEST-button is held down. You now know that wiring, Transducer and
Controller are working correctly.
If there is any deviation, first check the calibration (Chapter 4.2) and if necessary
use the Troubleshooting hints in chapter 7.

4. OPERATION

4.1 Setting of the fail-safe direction with Switch S1

Switch S1 is a wire-hook-switch, which may be soldered or cut for a final setting.

4.2 Calibration with CAL

This is only necessary during initial setup to compensate for all variables such as
cabling and installation characteristics (e. g. distance to wall) or if, during interface
detection the refractive index of liquids changes.
The sensor should be immersed in the optically more dense medium, i. e.

- Level sensing: liquid/gas = liquid

- Interface sensing: e. g. water/oil = oil

The Voltage across the sensor’s Phototransistor can be measured between "GN"
and "WS" of the Transducer connections. You should use a Voltmeter with an
input resistance Ri ≥ 10 MΩ and a range of 10 VDC.

4.3 Adjusting of delay time for Signal relay with switch S2, Potent. P1 and P2

Switch S2 is a wire-hook-switch for switching signal delay on or off. The delay time
may be adjusted separately for activating and releasing of the “Signal” relay. It can
be used with turbulent or bubbling liquids.

No delay: - close S2 or solder it for permanent closing

With delay: - open S2 or cut off for permanent opening

- delay for activating ( _↑ ) adjust with P1 as
needed (0-8s)
- delay for release ( ↓_ ) adjust with P2 as needed
(0-8s)
Works setting: - S2 open, P1 and P2 middle position (ca. 3 - 4 s)

Conditions:
- P1 and P2 in middle position, ca. 3 - 4 s delay time if P2 is open
- Transducer in operation
- no failure condition
If S2 is open i. e. delay on “TEST”-button has to be kept pressed longer than
delay time to get a complete test.
If S1 and S2 are open, Sensor tip immersed, the start period of the test is
suppressed. The same situation will apply with S1 closed, S2 open and Sensor
tip dry. No test procedure can be generated when FAILURE is signalised with
flashing red LED.

This Test-function allows to check independently from the operational situation the
complete signal chain from controller to signalising equipment or actuators. As
long as the automatic internal test gives a permissive signal for a properly working
Transducer, the test also checks the function of the controller.

4.5 Operational characteristics of the SIGNAL relay

see Tab. 4.

4.6 Operational characteristics of the STÖRUNG (FAILURE)relay

In normal operation the FAILURE relay is activated and is released automatically

together with the SIGNAL relay in following cases (fail-safe-behaviour):

- external power supply is interrupted for more than 100 ms

- internal power supply is interrupted or severely reduced
- short-circuit (BR-WS) or failure of Infrared-LED or interruption (BR)
- short-circuit (GN-WS) or interruption to Photo-Transistor (GN)
Supplementary information see Tab. 4. (GR=green, BR=brown, WS=white)

5. MAINTENANCE

Under normal conditions the optoelectronic level switches are maintanance-free. If

there are severe problems with grime and crusting, it may be necessary to
introduce a maintenance-instruction. This can be done by a regularly
measurement of the Voltage between GN/WS (Transducer connection):

- Immersed (BENETZT) 5 V +0,5 V / -0,1 V

- Dry (TROCKEN) 0,1 - 3 V *)

*) depending upon Sensor design; with elongation and/or Heat-sink this Voltage
may reach value of up to 3 V.

If the difference between Immersed and dry is continuously reducing or the above
suggested values can not be measured, the Sensor tip should be cleaned.

6. GUARANTEE
We grant a guarantee period of 12 months, from 1st of January 2002 24 months
for our products, provided that they have been handled and operated under
conditions described in the Operating Manual. In case of wear and spare parts we
only guarantee for failures in construction and material.
