Answer all questions

1. In a mobile phone shop, the probability that a mobile phone is too slim is 0.1 and the
probability that a too slim mobile phone is also too short is 0.2. What is the probability
that the mobile phone that is selected randomly from the shop will be both too slim and
too short? (2 Marks)

2. A bit string of length four is generated at random so that each of the 16 bit strings of
length four is equally likely. What is the probability that it contains at least two
consecutive 0s, given that its first bit is a 0? (We assume that 0 bits and 1 bits are equally
likely) (2 Marks)

4. A machinery manufactured by a company consists of two parts, say, part A and part B. In
the process of manufacture of part A 9 out of 100 are likely to be defective and 5 out of
100 in the manufacture of part B are likely to be defective. Calculate the probability that
the machinery is not defective. (3 Marks)

5. State and prove Bayes’ theorem. (3 Marks)

6. In a single group with two dice, find the probability that

(i) The sum of numbers obtained on both dice is 8
(ii) Odd number on the first die and 6 on the second die. (4 Marks)

7. Urn 1 contains five white and three black balls and urn 2 contains three white and four
black balls. Two balls are selected at random from urn 1 and transferred to urn 2. Then a
ball is drawn from urn1 and it happened to be black. What is the probability that the
transferred ball was white? (5 Marks)
