CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

This chapter describes the purpose, function, description and system

specifications of ADTR-2K Automatic Dielectric Constant, Tan Delta and
Resistivity Test Set.

Fig. {-{
1.1 Description
The Eltel Automatic Dielectric Constant, Tan delta &Resistivity Test set, (Model
ADTR-2K) is an instrument designed to measure three important parameters of
an insulating medium. Though specifically designed for testing oil and other
dielectric fluids, it can be used to test other insulating media, provided a suitable
test fixture is available. By combining the three measurements in a single unit,
the entire test procedure is simplified to a great extent, resulting in considerable
saving.in nirne. Once the instrument is installed and test connections are made,
tests can be carried out without ever disturbing the test set-up. Many advanced
features and safety checks are built into this instrument, making it a very reliable,
simple and safe instrument to operate and maintain.

This instrument is fully automatic and microprocessor controlled. lt measures

Dielectric Constant, Tan Delta & Resistituity of the transformer oil as well as other
insulating media at set voltages and display the results.

1.3 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION:

The ADTR-2K performs two different measurements: one, it measures resistance

and second, it measures Capacitance and dissipation factor.

1.3.1 RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT:

The resistance measurement is accomplished by using semiconductor junctions
that converts the current from the sample into a voltage with logarithmic
compliance. ln this fashion, one circuit can easily cover a range of six decades of
current, or resistance without using any range changing. Such a circuit is used
here to measure resistance from 1 .Mega -Ohm to 1 T-Ohm.

ln order to make the measuring circuit self-checking and self-calibrating, two

reference resistors are used in identical logarithmic circuits. Thus, by measuring
the output of the two logarithmic circuits with the reference resistors, the
logarithmic circuit with the unknown resistance, and the output of a voltage
divider, the measuring circuit can be calibrated and the unknown resistance
determined.

A regulated and adjustable voltage of (+; and (-) polarities is generated in the
instrument to power the measuring circuit.

The Resistivity (ohm-cm) of the measured sample is calculated from a

knowledge of the test cell and the nreasured resistance.
* *
L = 3.6 pi C ohms, ohm -cm, where C is the capacitance of the ernpty cell.
The >3.6*pi . C < is typically referred to as the cell constant -"K".

1.3.2 CAPACITANCE & DISSIPATION FACTOR MEASUREMENT:

The capacitance measuring circuit uses a transformer ratio-arm bridge to

compare the unknown capacitance sample to a reference capacitor. The inherent
characteristics of the transformer ratio-arm bridge allows convenient three-
terminal measurements to be made, such as are required when using a three-
terminal guarded test vessel for insulating oil, or a three terminal guarded test
fixture for insulating sheet.

The transformer ratio-arm circuit is configured here for conducting the

ungrounded specimen test (UST). This is most useful and convenient, as any
stray capacitance to ground is automatically eliminated from the measurement.
The bridge circuit uses a 100pF, guarded capacitor for as a reference.

The bridge circuit uses part balance and part read-out to arrive at the reading.
The capacitance is primarily measured by changing the ratio of the comparator
transformer, while the losses in the circuit are read out as the unbalance signal of
the bridge.

REV.O

l
i
-r

ELTEL ADTR-2K

The bridge measuring circuitry measures the

. Voltage (V)
. Frequency (F)
. Capacitance (Cx)
. Power loss (W)
From these four measurements, and a knowledge of the test cell, the dielectric
constant and the dissipation factor (DF) or Power factor (PF) for the test
specimen is determined. The calculations determine:
L=Cx/C;
DF = W/( V.Ar) = Wl(V *V
" 2* pi * F " Cx)
PF=W/(V.A)
For precision measurements, a sinusoidal excitation signal is required. Thus the
instrument has an internal adjustable sinusoidal excitation source that is locked
to the line frequency. The source provides a sine wave excitation with less than
1% distortion in the incoming line.
The bridge circuit is such that it measured the "parallel equivalent" of the test
sample. This leads to easy calibration of the circuitry as:
. The voltage can be calibrated with a calibrated voltmeter;
. The capacitance can be easily calibrated with a known capacitor;
. The loss can be easily calibrated with a known resistance.
1.4 Features
. Rugged Compact Design.
. Fully automatic operation; lnstrument self balances and guides the
operator by means of menu driven Alpha-numeric display
. Keyboard entry of parameters.
. Automatic and continuous calibration of Resistance measuring circuit
against two internal resistance standards.
o Automatic and continuous calibration of C & DF measurement against
internal reference capacitor.
o lnternal AC Voltage source of line frequency and sinusoidal wave shape.
o lnternal DC Voltage source for 1+; and (-) voltages.
. Digital display of test results on 240 x 128 dot backlit LCD display.
. RS-232C computer interface for downloading data or control from PC.
o Centronics parallel port printer interface for direct test data printout.
. Menu driven software operation.
. Measures Resistivity by applying (+) or (-) voltage.
o Print facility of final results.

CHAPTER 3
ACCESSORIES & CABLES

3.1 Available Accessories:

3.1.1 OIL CELL Heater:
The heater is a very compact unit and used to heat the oil in the cell
to the required temperature. This uses a high frequency induction
heater which raises the temperature to 90oC in 15 minutes
approximately. A knob and dial are provided to set the temperature
at required level. A temperature sensing probe is supplied and this
senses the temperature and stops heating the oil once the set
temperature is reached. Two LED are provided to indicate
"Heating on" and "Heating off'. To ensure safety to built-in micro
switch interlock automatically trips out the high voltage when the
flexi cover of the heater is raised.
3.'1.2 Oil Test Cell:
This 3 Terminal Oil Test cell is designed for routine and laboratory
tan delta test on transformer oils and other electrical insulating
liquids. The electrode of the cell is designed with a spherical bottom
which offers more uniform stress on the oil as compared to
electrode with tapered end.
3.1.3 C,DF & Resistivity Calibrator:
This is an optional accessory. Calibration box is useci to routinely
check and inspect the test set. The portable offers one capacitance,
three Tan delta & fourR_esistivity values. The maximum operating
voltage is 500 V AC or DC.
3.1.4 Solid Dielectric Test Cell:
This is an optional accessory. Solid test cell is designed to test
electrical insulating material in sheet form using the RbfR-2K test
set. The circular electrodes are constructed from rigid stainless
steel and will accept samples with a minimum of 120 mm diameter.
