SME6034 ASSESSMENT IN LEARNING MATHEMATICS

SEMESTER 2 SESSION 2017/2018

The assignments for this course are to be carried out in a group of four (4) and
individually. There are two (2) group assignments and two (2) individual
assignments. The overall weightage for these assignments is 60%: group
assignments 30% and individual assignments 30%.

GROUP ASSIGNMENTS

1. Topic: Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) problem solving questions (20%)
Develop ten (10) HOTS problem solving questions based on Form 1 (5
questions) and Form 2 (5 questions) topics. The solution for each question is
shown step by step. (Suggestion: You can use i-THINK maps for your
solutions)
Due : 9 March 2018 (Week 3)

2. Topic: Traditional and alternative assessment strategies (10%)

Discuss the traditional and alternative assessment strategies in mathematics


education. Compare and contrast these strategies employing relevant
activities. Show how these assessment strategies are been practiced
mathematics classroom
Due: 30 March 2018 (Week 6)

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS

3. Topic: Developing Muliple-Choice Questions (MCQ) (15%)

Choose three (3) topics from Form 2 Mathematics. Based on Bloom’s


Taxonomy cognitive levels, develop a set of 40 multiple-choice questions on
these topics. Build a Test Specification Table indicating the level of difficulty:
10 easy questions, 20 moderate/average questions and 10 hard/difficult
questions. Then, the set of questions needs to be administered to at least 30
students. Based on their answers, find:
i. the difficulty index.
ii. the discrimination index.
iii. determine whether the discriminators are functioning or not.
iv. Determine whether the question is useable, need to be modified or
eliminated.
v. Compare the difficulty level of the questions that you planned to the
analysis.
Write a full report on your findings.
Due: 27 April 2018 (Week 10)
4. Topic: Developing Structure Questions (15%)

Choose three (3) topics from Form 2 Mathematics. Based on Bloom’s


Taxonomy cognitive levels, develop a set of 20 structure questions on these
topics. Build a Test Specification Table indicating the level of difficulty: 5 easy
questions, 10 moderate/average questions and 5 hard/difficult questions.
Compare the difficulty level of the questions that you planned to the analysis.
Write a full report on your findings.
Due: 4 May 2018 (Week 11)
