BACKGROUND

For a thousand years, the ancient city of Varanasi has been a symbol of knowledge, education and culture.

A combination of archaeology, mythology, art and history makes Varanasi a great cultural hub. Varanasi is
popularly known as the 'temple’ city and is considered as the cultural capital of India.

With its rich history, literature, music and religion this city has managed to become one of the most ethnically
diverse city with influential intellectual past. The city is certainly a mix of paradoxes and contradictions abuzz
with activities.

Amidst all this, one of the biggest concern is that the city culture is decaying. We are not valuing our own
culture, instead we find honor in aping the west.

Nothing has been done to promote the existing art and culture. As the history of the city, perhaps, is as old as
the civilization itself; it is important to preserve it all. Varanasi is the workplace and birthplace of many
philosophers and poets. The quintessence of Varanasi is its vibrant spiritual atmosphere which needs to be
saved.

Varanasi is struggling between modernity and tradition. Old voices are crying that we must preserve,
new voices are saying we must change.

Varanasi is at war with itself. The dying art and culture of the city must be restored.

The City identity centre in this hour of need will rejuvenate the lost enthusiasm and love for the rich culture
and heritage. This centre will act as a city hub for the lost art, literature, local delicacies and hidden or
abandoned talents as well. To promote this lost art, this centre would not only promote the local values but will
also connect people on emotional level.

It will also provide information about the local work, facilities and people, and will also promote the local talent
and delicacies among the tourists. Lush green space will promote the intellectual growth on local as well as
global level.

CONCLUSION
The real Banaras was devotional, responsive, captivating, charming, mythical yet true, hence this building will
act as an emotional connect between the ancient, medieval ,and modern values. The soul of the oldest
civilization still lives in the city and hence it is our responsibility to restore the dying culture.

Writer Kaashinath Singh wrote, 'Jo Maza Banaras me vo na Paris me na France me'. That’s the kind of Banaras
we are dreaming of. It’s time to restructure the lost identity, it’s time to change the time.
