The barbaric act of Nilutpal and Abhijit’s mob lynching that shook only Assam, but
the entire nation found its echoes at several places across the globe.

Ellene Lemonade, an artiste by profession and passion, who lives in Moscow is

creating waves in social media platforms seeking justice for Nilutpal Das and Abhijit
Nath, who fell prey to mob frenzy in Assam’s Karbi Anglong last Friday.

A Russian citizen Ellena, who happened to be a personal friend of Nilutpal has

organized candle light vigil in Moscow, apart from starting a campaign in facebook
seeking justice for the two youths of Assam.

She has also changed her profile picture in facebook with just a black background.

n an emotionally surcharged message on facebook just few hours back, Ellena wrote:

“This is a message for humanity,

Nilotpal Das was a dear friend of our’s who won the heart of everyone around him
with love and affection, he was always playing his part in making this world a better
place.

He was really a special human being one in a million, could never see anyone around
him sad, his passion was art, music, and feeding people tasty food, which always
made him happy no matter how he was feeling feeding people tasty food made him
feel good.

What happened to our friend Is really sad and took out faith away from humanity and
India. We have been coming to India for past so many years but now after seeing this
incident that our friend who always told the world to come to India and enjoy the
beautiful country was killed by his own countrymen which is so sad as he really felt
for the people of his own country.

The whole world is talking about this. We would like to request the people of India to
really take this incident seriously and make their death not go in vain and demand for
justice and special law which make this country safer for Indians and tourist as well.

The world always thinks India is not safe and after this incident everyone believes it
as well,

Please citizens of India, this is your country and only you have the power to change it.

You need to stand United to this cause of making your country safer for everyone
irrespective of religion, caste, colour, country.

Seriously this is 21st century, the whole world is living in modern society and to see

incident as both the souls lost in this gruesome manner is a stain on humanity.

17 hurt in protest on lynching
Guwahati: Seventeen people, including seven policemen, were injured on Sunday after
violence erupted during a protest here over the lynching of two youths from the city in
Karbi Anglong on Friday night.

The incident took place a few hours after Guwahati police and Kamrup (metro) district
administration urged the people to maintain peace and not to be misled over the
lynching.

Nearly 2,000 joined the march which began around 4pm. The protest was organised
through a Facebook group by people seeking justice for the Guwahati youths Nilotpal
Das and Abhijit Nath, who were lynched on the suspicion of being child kidnappers. The
march headed from Gauhati Commerce College to Assam Engineering Institute
playground.

"The commotion started after some marchers started pelting stones. Seven of our
personnel were injured in stone pelting and we had to resort to a lathicharge to disperse
the protesters," deputy commissioner of police (central) Ranjan Bhuyan said.

Khanindra Talukdar, who was part of the march, said 10 protesters, including three girls,
were injured in police lathicharge.

The injured protesters were admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Biman Sarma, a senior citizen who joined the march, accused the police of caning
protesters without provocation. "The protest was peaceful. After returning from the
Assam Engineering Institute playground, we were going to light candles at Commerce
College point in memory of the two youths. But a group of policemen suddenly started
caning us," he alleged.

Jabes Alam, another protester, claimed a group of people reached Commerce College
point during the end of the march and started pelting stones at the policemen at the site.

After the violence, the police picked up three youths for interrogation.

Before the incident, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the district administration
demanding the police to file the chargesheet in the lynching incident soon and a trial in a
fast-track court. They also demanded arrest of the policeman apparently standing without
intervening in the video capturing the lynching.

The protesters demanded dismissal of Karbi Anglong deputy commissioner Mridul Kumar
Mahanta for his "irresponsible comment" that the duo should have gone to the area after
taking permission from the administration.

The protesters said they would meet again at 4pm on Monday in front of Guwahati
Planetarium and hold a candlelit procession. Hundreds of residents lit candles
demanding justice for Nilotpal and Abhijit at Thana Charali in Tinsukia on Sunday.
Guwahati police commissioner Hiren Chandra Nath, after the incident at Commerce
College point, said, "From now, all kinds of protests without the permission of police will
be strictly prohibited in the city."

GOLAGHAT, June 10: The activists of Oikya Sena Asom (OSA) and All Assam Minority
Students’ Union (AAMSU) staged protests separately in the Golaghat-Karbi Anglong
connecting road at Rongjan and Labanghat on Sunday against the barbaric killing of two
youths in Karbi Anglong and demanded capital punishment for the culprits involved in the
incident. The activists of OSA shouted various slogans against the barbaric and shocking
incident which took place in Karbi Anglong by staging a two-hour protest in the Golaghat-
Karbi Anglong connecting road at Labanghat. On the other hand, AAMSU Golaghat district
committee blocked the NH-39 at Rongajan for one hour.

Both the organizations condemned the barbaric killing of two innocent youths, mistaking
them to be child-lifters. Golaghat AAMSU general secretary Essad Hussain and Golaghat
OSA vice-president Pallab Borthakur, president Deva Bora and secretary Taufik Ahmed
demanded the Assam Government to hang all the culprits involved in the brutal killing of
Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath.

16 Arrested for Lynching 2 Youths in

New Delhi: Moving swiftly, the Assam Police have arrested 16

people in connection with the lynching of two Guwahati-based
youths in Karbi Anglong district on Friday night.

Nilutpal Das and Abhijit Nath were battered to death on suspicion of

being child lifters.

The arrested persons have been booked under Section 302/34 of

IPC, and interrogation is on.
Additional Director General of Police, Mukesh Agarwal, told News
18 that the ‘core group’ of 15 people directly involved in the attack
have been picked up on basis of field information and technical
intelligence.
“We have arrested 16 persons, so far – 15 of them are directly
involved in the attack, while one has been arrested for posting
objectionable content on social media inciting communal violence,
soon after the incident took place. We are treading meticulously in
this case, and investigation is on. There’s no substance to the rumour
of ‘Sopadhora’ (child lifters) in the area that comprises 4-5 villages.
But it had created a fear psychosis among people here,” said
Agarwal.

The incident happened when the two boys were on their way to the
Kanthi Langso picnic spot when their vehicle was attacked by a
group of men at Panjuri Kachari village, 16 km from Dokmoka
town, at around 8:42pm.

Eyewitnesses said the two boys were brutally hit by bamboo poles
and wood, and tortured to death by a mob of ‘inebriated’ villagers.

“It happened when a local informed a group of villagers about two

men travelling in a black car with an abducted child. This group of
men were drinking at the nearby dhaba,” said a shopkeeper of the
area who was present at the time of the incident.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held a meeting today

with top police officials and directed them to ensure that no one
found guilty be spared.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia, while

addressing the media, requested people not to believe in rumours.
Chief Secretary of Assam, T Y Das, was also present in the press
conference.

“People should not believe in rumours – these stories of ‘Sopadhora’

or Monkey Man are fragments of someone’s imagination. We have
directed the superintendent of police (SPs) in each district to take
legal action against anyone found spreading rumour on social
media,” said DGP Saikia.

Meanwhile, police have launched a crackdown on anti-social

elements trying to disturb public order and incite violence by posting
objectionable and unsubstantiated content on social media. Two
persons have been arrested so far from Guwahati and Biswanath
district.

People across the state have taken to the streets demanding justice
for Nilutpal and Abhijit. Tens of thousands descended on the streets
of Guwahati on Sunday afternoon carrying placards condemning the
incident and demanding stringent punishment for the culprits.

“We are different communities living in Assam, and there should be

no insecurity among each other. They killed two of our brothers, for
no fault of theirs. If justice is not met, protests would only
aggravate,” said one of the protesters.
Elsewhere in Karbi Anglong, various groups, including the All
Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Karbi Students’
Association (KSA), led a protest march, demanding that justice be
served.

Thousands rally to demand justice

Guwahati: Thousands gathered on Monday afternoon for the second straight day
demanding justice for Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath at Judges Field here.

The gathering, organised through social media, saw the active participation of the youth
along with artists and other prominent personalities, who sought justice for the duo, who
were killed by a mob on Friday night in Karbi Anglong district on the suspicion of being
child-lifters.

Police had to lathicharge a gathering at Gauhati Commerce College point here on

Sunday after the protest turned violent. Altogether 17 people were injured in the police
lathicharge.

In Monday's gathering, the youths staged a silent protest by covering their faces with
a gamosa or a black cloth and showed placards demanding justice.

"It is a shame on us. If a boy was killed for having long hair, then who will come here? It
is meaningless to promote Assam tourism without solving such a mindset. We are now
tech-savvy and social media-savvy but not literate," singer Zubeen Garg ,who
participated in Monday's gathering, said.

Zubeen also slammed Karbi Anglong deputy commissioner for his irresponsible comment
over the incident. "We are Assamese. We have the right to go to any place of the state.
Why will anybody inform the administration before travelling to any place?" Zubeen
asked.

Demanding an amendment to the Constitution and to enact strict action against lynching, Zubeen said,
"The Constitution is not the Gita. There are loopholes in our Constitution, which make trials longer. It
inspires miscreants to commit crimes. We demand the killers be arrested immediately and punished. In
such a situation there should not be any political motive."

Claiming himself to be a socialist, the singer alleged that the BJP and the Congress always try to divide
society for political gains.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Monday demanded a CBI inquiry into
the lynching and a trial of the accused in a fast-track court.

He also lambasted the police for not being able to rescue the victims, saying police did not reach the
spot though the police station was barely 4km from the spot.

He questioned why the chief minister is yet to take action against these policemen.

Akhil claimed that a few members of the BJP and the RSS are circulating fake news about child-lifters
being on the prowl across the state through social media to divert the people's attention from the
Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which resulted in the lynching of the two youths.

Akhil said he has submitted proof of the RSS and the BJP members' involvement in spreading the
rumours to director-general of police Kuladhar Saikia. He has also filed an FIR at Chandmari police
station seeking a fair probe into the lynching.
Intellectual Hiren Gohain also demanded a clear probe into the incident.

Assam: Protests in Guwahati against lynching of

two men on suspicion that they were kidnappers
Students and civil rights activists protested in Guwahati on Sunday against
the killing of two men two days ago by a mob, who they suspected to be
child abductors.

On Friday evening, a mob in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district

had beaten the two young men from Guwahati to death. The men – Nilotpal
Das and Abhijeet Nath – were artistes based in Goa and were back home for
the Bohag Bihu festival.

On Sunday, protestors gathered in the city’s Chandmari area and shouted

slogans demanding the resignation of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda
Sonowal and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. By 4.30 pm, the intersection
near Gauhati Commerce College was clogged with protestors and police
blocked most arterial roads leading to the intersection.

Many protestors also raised concerns about the anti-tribal narrative that has
been taking shape after the incident. “Any community in general cannot be
blamed for a heinous crime like this,” Sagarika Das, a protestor,
told Scroll.in. “If a similar incident had happened in another other place in
Assam, it would have been equally wrong to blame the entire Assamese
community for the same.”

Another protestor, Mithun Alkon, who works in a private firm in Guwahati,

said: “The aim is to find a logical solution to the problem and not to support
any division which is visibly being created by some groups in the garb of
justice.”

The police later said that a group of protesters engaged in stone pelting and
they had to resort to using mild force against the group. Seven police
officials and four protesters were injured in the melee.

Earlier on Sunday, police said they had arrested 15 people in connection

with the incident. The police have also arrested one person for spreading
misinformation on Facebook about child abductors in the area.
