The Merriam-Webster online dictionary tells us that this word was first used in writing in the USA,
in 1794, but it’s etymology is very uncertain. John Simpson, chief editor of the Oxford English
Dictionary, tells us that cavorting (originally “cauvauting”) was initially used to describe how
horses sometimes leap and prance around in a very energetic way. When it was first used to describe
humans, it seems, that was because they were acting like excited horses, fooling around. The rest,
including the more informal use of this word to talk about, ahem, intimate matters between lovers,
is straightforward enough.
