 We know that words like girl, city and book are


nouns, but a noun like girl does not refer to any girl in
particular. It is a name we give to all persons of one kind –
girls in general.

 A noun like city does not refer to any city in particular.


It is a name we give to all the cities in general. The city may
be anywhere in the world.

 Similarly, a noun like book does not refer to a


Particular book. It may be a book of English or
Mathematics. Such nouns like girl, city and book, are
known as common nouns.

 Common nouns do not begin with a capital letter
unless they are used at the beginning of a sentence.

name of a particular building and Agra is a noun, which
is also a special name, the name of a particular city.

Rohit, Reema, Rina, Raj, Mumbai, Juhu Tara Road,


Taj Mahaland Agra are all proper nouns.

 A noun which is a special name, of a particular

person, place or thing is a proper noun.

February, March and so on are all proper nouns.
 The names of the days of the week- Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday and so on are all proper
nouns.
 The names of particular lakes, oceans, rivers etc.
are all proper nouns.

 You must have noticed that proper nouns


always begin with a capital letter even if they
are used in the middle of a sentence.
