1. Risk-taking behavior. Impulsivity includes personality traits such as sensation seeking and
aggressiveness. Some substance abusers may be labeled as edge walkers people who are living on
the edge of danger or risk. Impulsive disinhibited individuals are at increased risk for alcohol
related problems and the traits of impulsivity are elevated in the children of alcoholics. Drug use
involves taking the risks involved in using. There have always been individuals who, when told no,
are curious and perhaps contrary, translate that no into yes. This is specially true of adolescents.
Alcohol/drug use affects each individuals physical and emotional balance for some. That balance is
very delicate even before they start to use alcohol/drugs. Individuals who have a need to be in
control usually have a negative reaction when they use alcohol/
