EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report describes and layouts the standard procedure adopted for the design of
conventional highway bridges in Pakistan. A real life bridge has been selected to fulfill the said
purpose. This bridge is located in Province KPK over a river stream and author of the report has
prepared its detailed structural design.

The methodology adopted for the design of bridges in Pakistan is of hybrid in nature. West
Pakistan Code of Practice for Highway Bridges (1967) is adopted for the specifications of live
load, wind load and braking loads while AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012)
are consulted for other type of loads and design formulations. Hence it gives a hybrid type of
method of design which is in practice in Pakistan for the design of conventional bridges.

The report presents a step by step and formulated way of explanation of various techniques
involved in the design of the prescribed bridge structure. Final completed construction drawings
of the bridge have also been presented in this report to illustrate the overall practical results of
the design process.
