Document Development Exposition: Letter, Email, and Cover Letter

ENGL 2116

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
When I first started planning the letter, I had to figure out who I was going to write to. I decided to
keep my organization as PETA since that was one I was familiar with from my white paper. I did some
searching and ultimately decided to write a letter to the pope of the catholic church trying to
persuade him to stop the use of leather in bibles because they may contain cat skin in countries with
lax animal abuse laws. I had to plan an introductory paragraph of greeting, buffer, and then describe
my problem, come up with questions and a call to action, what I wanted the pope to do.

When I started planning the email, I decided that my audience would be an adoptapet.com customer
support manager and I would be a adoptapet customer service agent writing to my manager that
unfortunately I did not receive good results on the usability tests that I conducted for the
instructions that I had written on adopt a pet.com. The biggest challenge in my planning was figuring
out how I would introduce the bad news with a solid buffer.

First Draft (for peer editing)

When writing the letter, my main challenge was creating the questions to ask the pope as well as
creating the letterhead since that was new to me.

When writing the email, I did not encounter into too many issues.

Second Draft (for your packet)

For the second draft, I had received peer feedback in that my letter brings up a valid point, is
interesting, clear, had an appropriate formal tone, and has valid evidence Some recommended
changes for the letter was to change some of the inflammatory language and add more color to the
letter head.

For the email, I received peer feedback in that while the email is written well, some more context
could be added and some of the added steps should be made more clear.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

Document Development Exposition: Letter, Email, and Cover Letter
ENGL 2116

For the final draft of the letter, I added more color to the letterhead, added borders, and fixed some
punctuation and grammatical errors

For the email, I established more of a background before introducing the problem. I added more
details about the problem and I breaked out the closing goodwill statement.
