Materials Handout 2: Assignment 1 Task Sheet – Materials (word count: 1000 words)
This assignment needs to be submitted electronically to your (online) tutor and must be
included in your final portfolio.
In this assignment you need to adapt and/or create one set of materials for one of your lessons. The
assignment should include:
 A description of the group of learners for which the materials are designed which justifies the
need for such materials (+/-150 words).
- What kind of learners are they? What are their needs? What are their interests?
- What are their ages and levels?
- What are their reading and writing abilities?
 A description of the materials and how they were used. (+/- 200 words)
- What do the materials look like? How were they used?
- What was the target language intended to be produced/practised?
 A rationale for the adaptation or creation of your materials based on input, reading and research
(+/-350 words). Keeping your students and materials in mind:
- Why is it necessary to create different kinds of materials?
- How do students benefit from different kinds of materials?
- How do your materials suit your learners’ needs?
 An evaluation of how the materials helped or hindered the lesson and a conclusion where
implications for further teaching of YLs are identified.
- What worked well and why?
- What didn’t work so well and why?
- What would you change before using the materials again?

* Please refer to your students in terms of ages rather than class codes e.g. 8-10 year olds
* Please use headings and bullet points to guide the reader.
* This assignment should only focus on the materials, how they were used, the group of learners they are
designed for and what you would change if you were to use them again.

Pitfalls (what not to do)

Do NOT write about all of the materials you have used in one lesson (the task is to evaluate ONE set of
materials.
Do NOT assume the assessor has seen your materials and knows how you used them. Be clear about what
they look like and how they were used. It is not enough to say a set of flashcards were used to play a game.
What images were used, what language was intended to be produced by the learners and how was the
game played? The assessor needs to be able to visualise the activity.
