PSYCHROMETRICS-COLLEGE HVAC SYSTEM ANALYSIS

OBJECTIVES

1. With the help of psychometric chart observe and record different psychometric

condition in south building college campus.

2. Evaluate the HVAC system and record comfort conditions with the help of

comfort chart and determine the conditions suitable for study or not.

THEORY

1. The theory of wet and dry bulb thermometers is based on the

_____________________________effect of the ______ bulb. The _________

surrounding air, the _________________ water will evaporate. This causes the

________ bulb to depress in temperature until a balance takes place between the

cooling effect and the normal heat gain from the ambient condition. The

psychrometer output relates this observed temperature _______________ and the

temperature of the dry bulb to a measure of _____________ in the air.

2.

(a) Effective temperature is said to be measure of comfort having combined effect

of air movement, relative humidity and dry bulb temperature. (pan global training

system,2010, v 2.0, ch-131, pg-335)

(b) Because effective temperature is not actual temperature, besides this there are

various combinations of dry bulb temperature and relative humidity for same air

velocity which feels like comfort for most of the people. (pan global training

system,2010, v 2.0, ch-131, pg-335)

3. For 97% of population ideal temperature is 66⁰F

PROCEDURE

Please refer to the procedure in Lab 1 from the course Lab Manual, (Aitken &

Raes, 2018, p.9), which was followed without deviation.

DISCUSSIONS

1. As per the data obtained all the points falls near the central zone but all the

observations recorded are outside comfort zone.

2. The obtained data reveal that most of the data are aligned with comfort

conditions. Only two locations are not aligned, i.e. near to G003 and outside of

gymnasium because they have relative humidity more than 30%.

3. The data obtained concludes that college HVAC system is perfectly working in

most of the location except some locations such as bridge entrance and basement

near maintenance shop.

4. In some of the classes as A223 have more than required amount of heating.

According to my opinion all the classes have their own controls of heating and

cooling so that temperature can be control as needed.

5. There are no other sources of error in comfort analysis other than human error. For

example, the reading of instrument with wrong angle other than parallel. Another

most common error found is improper wetting of wet bulb wick gives false reading.

6. The results obtained perfectly matches the theory. According to theory water

evaporates more rapidly as air becomes drier and wet bulb temperature decreases

to balance the heat gain and effective cooling. The data obtained also shows that

inside the building temperature is between 19⁰C-24⁰C but as we move outside the

air was dry which results in decrease in wet bulb temperature significantly to 0⁰C.

7. From the instrument I learned how moisture in air effects the dry bulb and wet bulb

temperature.
CONCLUSION

To conclude, the HVAC system in college is perfectly build and working properly

as per most of the people comfort. The data obtained also supports the statement

that in most of the location as per comfort chart more than 80% of people feels

comfortable at such temperature.
