Mood Vs. Tone-PD2

•  Do Now:

•  After my response, my mother said

“Don’t take that tone with me!” I was
definitely in a bad mood !

•  What is the difference between tone

and mood?

Mood Vs. Tone

•  Tone: is how the author feels about his/her characters
or story

•  Mood: is how the writer’s words make us feel. (The

effect the words have on us) The overall feeling or
atmosphere the text creates.

•  *Tone is different from mood because it describes how the

author feels about the characters, whereas mood describes how
the reader feels when reading the story.

Should the tone and mood of a piece be

the same?

•  They should be similar—the author uses a certain

tone so you will experience a desired mood.

•  i.e. In the “Toy Story Terror” video, the creator uses

a scary or chilling tone to make you (the viewer) feel
frightened.
LO:  By  the  end  of  this  lesson,  students  will  compose  a  constructed  response  identifying  the  character’s  mood  with  2
details  from  the  text.

How do writers create mood?

•  Writers create mood through:
ü the choice of setting, including time and place
ü imagery- descriptions that appeal to the reader’s
senses
ü conversations between characters

•  As you read, consider how the story makes you feel and
which words or passages make you feel that way.
