PREFACE
The educative process and the techniques of teaching have undergone rapid and radical changes during the recent
past, so much so, the science and art of teaching have today acquired a new complexity which calls for a
rigorous shift from the conventionalities followed at present by the faculty in the profession. The impact of
science and technology, as well as the national goals in the context of globalization has newly prescribed in view
of the changing social and political ideas, a vital role which saddles the teacher with great responsibilities in
effecting the much needed social change, and has raised his status to that of a social engineer.

One of the most important aspects of higher learning is the creation of new knowledge. The vibrant and
interactive process of creating and disseminating knowledge is what makes up a research culture. For realizing
the objective of knowledge generation, there should be a move away from the traditional programmes of study,
that are designed according to what can be referred to as the rational planning approach. According to this
perspective, programs of study are sufficient unto themselves and subject matter content takes priority. The
objectives-based model has dominated the world of education and has been guiding the learning process at all
levels for the past 50 years. The nurturing effect of this model is that it has inculcated a craze for parents and
students to score high marks in the exams whether they imbibe the content or not. In effect, there is a shift away
from the real world and application of the content learned, which obviously act as a deterrent of the quality and
knowledge generation as well. Therefore the agencies providing education should emerge as the providers of
wisdom and scholarship necessary for the society to take a right path in managing the imminent changes
happening in this technologically driven knowledge intensive economy. For this there is the need for these
agencies to take initiatives and strive to emerge into centres of academic excellence of international repute to be
the think tank for policy questions, discussions and formulations.

Likewise, in the present system of education, there is a disconnect between education, work and real world
performance expectations. Education aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that
enable them to recognize and solve problems in their domain of study and future work. It is in this context that
the present book, which attempts to bring out a few ideas logically presented based on theoretical as well as
research inputs gets relevance. There is a need to instill the 21 st Century skills which are necessary for students to
survive in this highly competitive world. The paper entitled “Improving Quality of Teaching Learning Process in
Classroom of Twenty-first Century” included in this volume is an attempt that will greatly contribute to meet the
needs of students for learning anywhere, anytime. The paper ‘Public Expenditure on Education in India -A
Critical Observation’ attempts to highlight the supply side of the problem in education. It tracks the trends in
public expenditure on education in reference to the vast population in the age groups of 0-14 and 15-30. The
paper further examines how inadequate investment in education can deprive the nation to reap the fruits of
demographic dividend. The interactive influence of Brain-Based learning and Hemisphericity on Academic
Achievement in Biology has been studied in another paper. Stress among students and Study Habits of students
are also ascertained in this. .

The literacy rate is generally considered as one of the important indicators of the development of a population
and the educational level of a population is seen as an important determinant of its quality of life. The causes and
consequences of illiteracy among women in West Bengal has been the subject in one paper and it also made
some recommendations for betterment of women. The fact that caste and gender play a very significant role in
the socialization patterns and education was the problem analysed by one of the studies. Caste Socialization is an
important aspect of the growing up of an individual. Education also influences and reinforces on various
occasions the socializing pattern of the family.

According to DFID (2008), the development of technical competencies and skills are at the centre of the
challenge of sustaining, accelerating and sharing the signs of economic growth across many parts of the
developing world. It is the necessity of these times to ensure the quality of the students coming out of any
institution or a university system. Therefore, the students should be exposed to the international environment so
as to acquaint themselves and make them watch closely the changes happening across the world. Proper updating
of the different programmes and policies in the global context through networking and exchange of resources is
desirable in this regard. Therefore it is imperative to get the leverages of knowledge society by initiating tie-up
with Centres of Excellence at national and international level and have faculty exchange programmes. The
present book is a pathfinder in this regard with a few results of novel research inpts.
