DESIGN CONCEPT AND DEVELOPMENT OF SHREDDING MACHINE

TO EXTRACT YOUNG COCONUT FIBER

Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering

ABSTRACT
Coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L) belong to the family of Arecaceae (Palm
tree).Coconut palms are grown in more than 93 countries of the world, with a total
production of 5.4 billion tons per year. Currently, the industrial world is evolving at a rapid
speed, where the demands of fiber are increasing. The consumptions and needs for fibers
are growing at an exponential growth. Hence, this study focuses on the Design Concept
and Development of Shredder Machine to Extract Young Coconut Fiber to meet the
current demand besides saving the environment. The concept of the young coconut
shredder machine, purposely to help improve the lives of the farmer and to reduce the
waste product or environmental problem and return the wastes into money in micro-scale
coconut industries.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
1) It is a common issue in small scale industry to not being able to dispose of young
coconut waste material due to its limited technology, need more labors energy and
required large space area on site for disposal of waste material. THE DESIGN OF
YOUNG COCONUT
2) Consumer demand for young coconut in small scale industry increase, but lack

management of the waste product due higher technology cost and labors energy

OBJECTIVES
1. To design and develop low cost young coconut shredder machine to convert coconut
shell into fiber in order to reduce the waste product or environmental problem.

2. To test the output performance and efficiency of the young coconut shredder machine in
terms of fiber and coco peat produced.

CONCLUSION
This machine was successful to be used in small industry, but further improvement is needed. The overall performance of the young coconut shredder machine
was found satisfactory considering that it has reasonable production output with acceptable quality of coir fibers. Based on the testing operation carried out on the
machine, the efficiency of the machine and fiber, the production fiber and coco peat and the production rate were recorded and analyses. The efficiency of the machine
and the production rate are two different parameters which were directly proportional to each other. So, increasing of the working time and working speed of the
electric motor will increase the production rate and also increase the efficiency of the machine.
