Set A

1. (a) Can two objects have different velocity but having zero acceleration? If
yes, give examples.

(b) A rocket rises vertically from rest with an acceleration of 3.2 ms -2 until runs out
of fuel at an altitude of 1200 m. After this point its acceleration is that of gravity,
downward. Calculate
(i) the velocity of the rocket when it runs out of fuel.
(ii) the time taken it takes to reach this point.
(iii) the maximum altitude does the rocket reach.
[10 marks]

2. (a) State the principle of conservation of momentum.

(b) A ball of mass 200 g and velocity 5 ms-1 collides obliquely with a
stationary ball of mass 300 g. After the collision, the first ball moves with velocity
3 ms-1 at an angle 60o from its initial direction above +x axis. Calculate the
magnitude and direction of velocity for the second ball.
