Staff Corner by Lou Najamy:
Well, it has been awhile since we last communicated with all of our members, due to the combining of the June and July
editions. We hope your summer is going well and everyone has had a chance to enjoy the hot, humid, dampish weather. Wow,
has it been uncomfortable this summer. Several of our members and families from the club as well as the Ladies Auxiliary have
traveled to Lebanon over the past several weeks and we hope to hear from some of them with their stories of adventures,
reunions, and families. We really need some input so our membership can stay connected and in touch with their heritage. Our
social members need to see the strong ties to our families and Lebanese heritage. We have some big events coming up in the
next several weeks so keep up with our calendar of events as well as our emails that are being sent out. Persons of the Year,
Family Picnic sponsored by LAX, Monday Night Football just to name a few of these upcoming events. Please make every
effort to participate in some of your club’s events, we really need membership support.
Unfortunately, we still have some outstanding ad subscriptions that need to be paid. If you have not paid your bill please do so
as soon as possible so that we can continue to supply you with this newsletter without any cost to our club’s treasury. If you have
misplaced your bill or cannot find it, just send your payment to Lebanon American Club, 22 West Street, Danbury, CT 06811
with a short note with your name or business and “Newsletter Payment” clearly written
Thoughts to Live By:
“In the best of times, our days are numbered anyway. So it would be a crime against nature for any generation to take the world
crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were designed in the first place: the opportunity to do good
work, to enjoy friends, to fall in love, to hit a ball, and to bounce a baby.” Alistair Cooke, British-born American broadcaster.”
(1908-2004).
“Lying is done with words and also with silence.” Adrienne Rich, American poet (1929-2012).
A Little Humor:
“Show me a man who claims he is objective and I’ll show you a man with illusions.” Henry R. Luce, American magazine
publisher (1898-1967).
“Go on failing. Go on. Only next time try to fail better.” Samuel Beckett, Irish playwright and author (1906-1989)..
Members News:
Welcome new member Joseph Cocco. He was sworn in on June 26 during general membership meeting.
Congratulations go out to Josh and Alyssa Caravakis Critelli on the birth of their son, Jaxson Michael Critelli born on July 26,
2018 and to the grandparents Mike and Marlene Caravakis and Jesse and Rosetta Critelli. May the whole family enjoy the
happiness and love a newborn baby brings.
Congratulations also go out to Brian and Gessika Lemay, daughter and son-in-law of Gabi and Vivanne Al Hayek on the birth
of their daughter, Liliana. May they have peace and happiness with their new daughter/granddaughter.
Congratulations to Johnny and Theresa AlHayek on the birth of their daughter Anna. Grandparents Gabi and Vivanne
AlHayek, Nabil and Helena Atallah will be kept very busy with all their grandchildren. God Bless their whole family.
Last month your board retired three bonds. The following bond holders were picked out of a hat to have their bonds retired:
Don Jowdy Sr., Jeff Bruno, and Dennis Ramey. Thank you gentlemen for your support.

Ladies Auxiliary News by President Betty Najm
I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Victoria and her extended family on the passing of her Mom, Jeanette
Beylouni. She passed away peacefully on Monday, June 11, 2018. Please keep Bob, Lisa’s husband and Randa in your prayers
for a speedy recovery. Also, I pray that the Lord keep all our members safe and well!
Congratulations to Beverly Ackell for being recognized for all her achievements in Danbury during the flag raising ceremony
on Lebanon day. Beverly was the school nurse at King Street Primary School, where kindergartners through second-graders
would come to her brightly decorated office for consolation, medication or sometimes just a break from class. She has broad
medical experience. She has worked in operating rooms and in pediatric and geriatrics wards in hospitals. Beverly has worked
in Danbury schools for over 20+ years spending time at the middle and high schools before going to work to the King Street
School where she worked for over 10 years. Beverly is a very active at St. Anthony Maronite church. She usually sings for the
Saturday evening mass. Her Mom was the choir director and taught Beverly and her sisters how to beautifully sing the Maronite
hymns. I know that she closely worked with her sisters as they volunteered countless hours for many of St. Anthony's outreach
programs including the Thanksgiving Food Drive and the Christ “giving” Tree Christmas program whereby less fortunate
children were given a gift of clothing and a toy bought by members of St. Anthony.
She was the President of the Lebanon American Ladies Auxiliary. She still returns to many of the club events were she
beautifully sings the National Anthem and the Lebanese Anthem. She was honored for being an outstanding Lebanese-
American citizen of the Greater Danbury Community!
The Family Picnic will be on Sunday, August 26 at the Pavilion at the Vespucci Lodge between 12 noon – 4 pm. Let me
or Lisa know if you can volunteer. Let us know in advance, unfortunately it’s hard to place volunteers at the last minute. We’ll
need people to husk corn, prepare set-up for the food and dessert tables and to run the kids events. Volunteers please call Lisa at
(203)482-6841 before August 7. The Men’s club has offered to help grill again. Thank you for all your support.
The Lebanon-American club is really happy and excited to be participating in the 2018 fundraising efforts for the St. Jude
Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer happening September 22 in Stamford, CT. September is also Childhood Cancer
Awareness Month. You may have attended the St. Jude discussion held at the club. Norma Khalil-Osta, Carl Rhode and
Rosemarie Franchini spoke to us on March 20 about the wonderful work St. Jude is providing. St. Jude won’t stop until no child
dies from cancer or other life-threatening diseases and has pushed the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% when it first
opened its doors to over 80% today. So, Lisa Antous was inspired and signed up to be the Team Captain for this great event!
I’m inviting you to be a part of this great cause! The Ladies Auxiliary has voted, and it will match donations made by its
members up to $250. Please check with your employer to see if they MATCH your donation.
Every single gift matters and makes a difference in saving a child’s life. Please go to the website:
http://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR/Walk/Walk?team_id=220416&pg=team&fr_id=89681
Our next meeting will be Wed. Sept. 5 at 7 pm. Please contact Patricia Najamy,if you would like to bring dessert or soft drinks.
