MATH in My Future Project (College 4 year degree)

OBJECTIVE: Determine the math requirements, training, and cost for the college of your choice.

TASK: You are to research the math requirements for the university/technical school/certification you are planning to
pursue and create a Digital Presentation (PPT/Prezi/Comic Video/etc) that presents your findings to your class. If you are
undecided or going to the military, you can choose between 1) Business at Georgia State University, GGC, UNG, Athens
Tech, or Lanier Tech 2) choose a major at the United States Naval Academy or United States Military Academy
Preparatory School. Using the current catalog for your school, and major, find the math requirements for your
degree. You are considered by colleges to be the class of 2023. Most research can be done online. Find and document all
of the following in your presentation.

Directions for future University Students

University/Institution/Technical School:_________________________________________________________________
Major_________________________________
I. Math requirements
a) What high school math classes do you need to have to enter college(2 pts)
(Located under admissions. You may need to call the college Admission office to get
this answer.

b) Determine the math course(s) (title and code) you must take for your major/careeras well as its
prerequisites, or courses you must take ahead of time if there are any. Do you have to earn a specific grade in
any of the courses to move on? (2 pts)
(This could be found under your major AND/OR “common core/general studies” classes.)

c). Determine if the school has a placement test for math (Accuplacer, SAT, ACT, etc). Note that most placement
tests do not award credit, instead they simply determine at which level you start. Determine if the
school will allow you to place out provided you have a suitable score on some standard test such as the
SAT or ACT. If so, state if you meet that requirement. (2 pts)
(This is normally found under the admission requirements section)

d) I. Determine the specific topics/concepts for the 1st college math course you are required to take. You must
check content, not just a title. (2pts)
(You can do this by tracking down a course syllabus online to get more specifics about each
course (Google search “course title with code + university/institution name”. Ex: College
Algebra math 1111 + Kennesaw State University).
II. Does this course match any of the topics in this AMDM course: statistics, mathematical models, finance,
etc? Please be sure to be explicit in your findings. (2 pts)
(Description of AMDM topics can be found at https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-
Standards/Frameworks/Advanced-Mathematics-Decision-Making-Standards.pdf )

e) Why did you take AMDM this year? Be honest. (1 pt)

II. Financial Requirements

a) Find the cost for a 3-hour course at the institution of your choice. (1 pt)
b) Find the cost of your first college math textbook you have to purchase: Include title, publisher, edition, and
online access if applicable). (Found on course syllabus you found earlier) (1 pt)
c) If most bachelor degrees require 120 hours, calculate how much it will cost to get your degree. Make sure
to add yearly/semester institution fees, housing and estimated book costs. (Use the values you found in
parts (a) and (b) to help you. Also look under “finical aid” on your school’s website.) (2 pts)
d) Using GAcollege411 or another scholarship site, determine at least one scholarshipand/or
grantopportunity that you can apply for. Briefly describe the requirements you need and the amount you
would receive (academic standing, due date, financial, ethnicity, recommendations, etc.) (2 pts)

III. Closure (3 pts)

a) How will you benefit from learning the material in this course? Please be thorough and thoughtful with
your answer.

IV. Works Cited (2 pts):

a) Include date viewed & URL for college web pages and specific course numbers (ex: MATH 1310). Add any
other websites you found helpful in compiling this information.
Ex) 8/3/2017 http://www.bulletin.uga.edu/MajorSpecific.aspx?MajorId=1 (MATH 1113)

b) Document any phone calls made to acquire information. Date, time, number called, department, and
information discussed.

PRESENTATION: You will present your presentation to the class. This presentation needs to be AT
LEAST 2 minutes and no more than 4 minutes and should summarize and show your work and research for this
project. You must sign up for a presentation day. If you fail to select a day, I will choose one for you.

My presentation day is scheduled for _________________________________.
