Proud To Be An American

Article by Mike “Baddog” Thomas

Pictures by “Baddog” & “Wild Bill”

This star spangled event was held on Sept 11th, a solemn day that is etched in our hearts forever, but it also was a day
that renewed the spirit of American pride and patriotism. The USA Patriots’ Day was sponsored by the Marine Corps
League to benefit the VA Wounded Warrior Program and local EMS Units and was hosted by Clyde O. Childress, Major,
USMC, Retired and wife Connie.
Major Childress is a retired Marine Corps Helicopter Pilot and the recipient of 21 Air Medals and 1 Distinguished Flying
Cross. The music festival brought everyone together to celebrate our wonderful United States and the Freedom that we
enjoy.  The event headliner was Charlie Daniels, with other performers being Kevin Skinner, winner of America’s Got Tal-
ent, the U.S. Army Rock Band, and other celebrities from around the area.  It was held on a beautiful estate named Vista
del Lago and was a wonderful and poignant day to celebrate our patriotism and to honor all branches of the military who
fight and risk their lives to protect our freedom.  It also provided an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives in
the tragic event on September 11, 2001.  You can view more photos from the event at www.usapatriotsday.com.
September 11, 2001 – The saddest day in United States history.

Riding Like The Wind
An inspirational story of a rider’s dedication
& determination as told by Donald “Duck”
Bolden in the Motorcycle Sales Dept of South-
side Harley-Davidson

I have been very fortunate to have met a woman

named Erica Bradshaw and I think you might
enjoy her story. Erica came into our dealership in
March of this year to purchase a motorcycle. She
was about to take the MSF course and wanted to
be ready to ride once she completed the course.
Erica had no experience whatsoever, but wasn’t
intimidated one bit. I didn’t know much about her
then, but I have learned that she is one very strong
woman.
Anyway, we went through the process of intro-
ducing her to the various models and explaining
the differences, benefits, and features of each.
Erica settled on a black  09 XL883L and that’s
when things started really rolling. We got her set
up with the proper riding gear and some parts for
her bike. A few days later she signed the papers
for her new bike. :)...She was actually singing while
she was signing her papers!! :)....It was such a fun
experience for me. We delivered Erica’s bike and
she was off to take the MSF course.
A week or so later Erica came in and told me
that she had not passed the course and that
she had fallen off of the bike. My heart sank as
I thought immediately that she may give up. It
wouldn’t be the first time I have seen that happen.
:)...I couldn’t have been anymore wrong. Erica
was even more determined that she would pass
the course and ride her bike. We talked every time
she would come in and I would do anything I could
to encourage her offer any advice or tips that I
thought may help. After a few tries, Erica made it
and I’m not sure who was happier.
Since then, Erica has been trying to ride the
wheels off that Sporty. She has over 9400 miles
on that bike since May! It has been an absolute
pleasure to see her grow as a rider. The joy that
it brings to her is infectious and she never fails to
put a smile on our faces when she comes in to the
shop.
I thought you might like to hear about Erica and
her story because in my opinion it’s so real. I would
love for other women that aspire to ride to hear her
story.

We’d like to thank Duck for bringing this wonderful

story to us & would especially like to send a big
thank you to Erica for allowing us to share it with
you all…here’s wishing you safe travels on the
road & the many miles ahead!....Thunder Roads

Blue Tooth Biking?
By Kevin G. Charleville

More and more you hear about states and individual com-
munities that are passing laws banning or creating ordi-
nances against using cell phones while operating a motor
vehicle. I would say that if there is this much concern about
the issue, then there must be a good reason for creat-
ing these laws. Twice within the last 2 years, I have had 2
separate instances where drivers had pulled out in front
of me while riding my motorcycle. Fortunately, other than
a nasty gaze I projected at the drivers, it was at very low
speeds and I was able to mitigate the situation and avoided
collisions. Although many laws have and will take effect on
prohibiting the use of cell phones while operating a vehicle,
it will be ok for, “Hands Free” operation, i.e. the popular
Blue Tooth devices. Many studies have shown however,
that humans are still very distracted by just the mere con-
versations they have while using their cell phones no matter
if they are holding the phones in their hands, or carrying on
a conversation with an electronic device slammed into their
ear. While driving a 4 wheeled vehicle, you can most likely
get away with these two means of communication, heck,
you can even get away with texting or searching the net.
However, we all know how critical it is (especially in heavy
traffic) to be 110% on our best alert game while riding a
motorcycle and anything to take away from this is a recipe
for disaster.
I do see more and more riders using Blue Tooth devices
while riding, I have yet to see someone texting while rid-
ing, but I am sure it has and will be done. This may sound
like I have something against Blue Tooth devices and cell Virginia
phones; however, this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
I damn near have a coronary anytime I run off and forget
my cell phone at home or somewhere else, and it’s a
major melt down when my battery goes dead in my phone
because I failed to charge it. I do not own a Blue Tooth
device simply because I have not seen a style that would
look good on me yet, maybe someday. So, what can we do
to make things safer for all of us? While riding, turn your
phones off. If you choose to have them on because you are
waiting for that most important call, then maybe you should
wait to ride until after receiving it. If you choose to ride with
your phone on, put it on vibrate and wait until your next stop
to view the call. If you must answer it while riding, pull off
the road to a safe zone before answering it. If you choose
to ride with a Blue Tooth device, again, I would pull off to
a safe zone to have my conversation. Something else I
have been noticing as well is the increasing amount of mp3
player usage with personal headphones. I have actually
been thinking about this myself. Ahhhh, music can be so
Mesmerizing sometimes, is this not a safe practice either? Hey all you guys & ghouls – Keep it safe out on the road while

Tats For Tots Winner – August 2010
Corey Dean
On May 30th, 2010 I was struck by lightning in a neighbor’s
backyard. I crumpled to the ground and went into immediate
cardiac arrest. My wife watched from a second floor window in
horror before running to be by my side. An ER trained nurse,
who also happens to be one of my neighbors was at my side
quicker than my wife could get to me. She performed CPR
for more than 5 minutes as Chesterfield Paramedics rushed
to the scene.  The Firefighters/Paramedics from Chesterfield
station 16 arrived 6 minutes after the initial 911 call.  They did
everything perfectly to shock my heart 3 times, and bring me
out of cardiac arrest.  They rushed me to St. Francis Medical
Center. The Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Staff, and everyone
else at St. Francis did everything just right to stabilize me and
after 2 hours they transferred me to MCV Trauma Center Burn
Unit for better care.  I went into Cardiac Arrest again during
the transfer, and once again was brought back by the skilled
Chesterfield Paramedics. Once at MCV, I was stabilized and
able to be removed from the respirator.  I began to come to in
the hospital on Wed. June 2nd, and I was able to go home on
Sat. June 5th. If it were not for the actions of my neighbor, the
firefighters, the hospital staff, and everyone involved in saving
my life, I would have left behind a 37 year old widow, a 13 yr
old daughter, and a 10 yr old son.  I thank God everyday for
putting these people into my life, and I would like to anything I
can to honor their actions.  I have visited the firefighters at their
station, and would appreciate honoring them once again with a
lightning inspired tattoo.

Edgar Müller was born in Mülheim/Ruhr on 10 July 1968. He grew

up in the rural city of Straelen on the western edge of Germany.
His fascination with painting began in his childhood, with paintings
of rural scenes of Straelen. He went to the high school in the
neighboring town of Geldern, where an international competition
of street painters took place. Inspired by the transitory works of art
which met him on his way to school, Edgar Müller decided to enter
the competition. He took part for the first time at the age of 16,
going on to win the competition, aged 19, with a copy of the famous
“Jesus at Emmaus “ (Caravaggio). In the years that followed, he
entered many other international competitions. Since 1998 Edgar
Müller has held the title of ‘maestro madonnari’ (master street
painter), born by only a few artists worldwide. The title
is awarded at the world’s largest street painting
festival, called The Grazie Festival, which is
held in the small pilgrim town of Grazie in
Italy.
Around the age of 25, Müller decided
to devote himself completely to
street painting. He travelled all
over Europe, making a living
with his transitory art. He
gave workshops at schools
and was a co-organizer and
committee member for
various street painting
festivals. Müller set up
the first (and so far only)
Internet board for street
painters in Germany
– a forum designed
to promote solidarity
between German street
painters.
Edgar Müller opened a
studio in the street. He
presents people with
the great works of old
masters, drawing his
perfect copies at the
observers’ feet. Müller
invites his audience to
share his fascination with
the old masters art, helping
them to gain an in depth
understanding of the old
master’s view of the world.
Despite attending many
courses with well-known artists
and extensive studies in the field
of communication design, Edgar is
actually an autodidact. He is always
looking for new forms through which

to express himself. Inspired by three-dimensional

illusion paintings (particularly by the works of Kurt
Wenner and Julian Beever) he is now pursuing this
new art form and creating his own style. Because
of his grounding in traditional painting and modern
communication, Müller uses a more simple and
graphic language for his art. He paints over large
areas of urban public life and gives them a new
appearance, thereby challenging the perceptions
of passers-by. The observer becomes a part of
the new scenery offered. While going about their
daily life, people change the painting’s statement
just by passing through the scene. Edgar Müller’s
extraordinary art has been widely covered in print
and digital media.

Well, on September 11th at 8:00 we set out for West “By Pastor T

big farms and little farms, goats and just God’s beauty in
every direction that you look in.  You look at a mountain
and you still can see every single tree.  This is how Jesus
looks at us.  He looks down here, but He can see each one
of us separate and unique.  And He handles each one of
us on a personal basis.
We got to West Virginia about 2:00 that afternoon
and were met by Aunt Toby and Grandma.  They are the
sweetest and warmest human beings that I have ever
known.  We ate homemade barbeque using an old recipe
from a place called Spud’s Barbeque .  This place was in
Alderson for many years and Grandma had worked there
for 32 years.  When the owner died, the recipe went right
along with him, except for the fact that it was etched in
Grandmas heart and mind.  I am here to tell you, that was
the best barbeque that has ever crossed this Dinwiddie
girl’s lips!  Many people have asked Grandma for the
recipe and her reply is always, “If he had wanted you to
have it, he would have given it to you, now wouldn’t he.”
We were going to baptize them in them in the river, but
Grandma had a cold and it was pretty chilly up there so we
decided to do our baptizing in the bathtub.  If I live to be
100, I will never forget what Grandma told me right before I
baptized her.  She looked at me with such love in her eyes
and said, “Thank you so much for this, now I’m ready to go
home.”  The feeling that came over me was overwhelming.
It was such a great honor that God, in His infinite wisdom
had entrusted me to baptize one of His precious saints! Pastor Tammy Hayes preaches at New Creation in Christ

Your Rights at a Traffic Stop
About a year ago I was asked to give a presentation, which
I titled “Your Rights During a Traffic Stop, at the Beast of the
East in Greenville , SC.   It covered issues such as what are
the Fourth and Fifth Amendment implications during a traffic
stop?  What can and can’t the police search and under what
circumstances can they do it?  What is the legality of check-
points and what is the legality of motorcycle only checkpoints?
It also gave several tips aimed and making any traffic stop not
necessarily more enjoyable but at least less painful.
It was well received and the firm has since received re-
quests from several organizations to give the presentation
again for their group.  Chad fuller and I have repeated the
presentation at both Sumter South Carolina and most recently
in Peoria, Illinois .
If you would be interested in having our firm give this pre-
sentation for your group, club, organization or gathering please
let me know and I will be happy to arrange it.
