CHAPTER III
BACKGROUND
Subsection 4
Infrastructure becomes the basic physical needs to ensure the economy to
function both directly and indirectly. Infrastructure itself is a prerequisite for other sectors
to develop and also be a link between one another. So that infrastructure development
will trigger economic process so that can develop economic and social impact.
One of the infrastructure to support economic and social activities is the bridge.
The bridge is a construction in order to continue the path through a lower obstacle. These
obstacles can be either waterways or traffic. Along with the development of technology
and the increasing mobility of the community, the construction of bridges with long and
strong spans will be needed. Therefore, the need for mastery of bridge technology from
aspects of planning, equipment and materials. In planning the construction of long-span
bridges, strong and lightweight bridge structure technology is required to be able to
withstand the loads that work on the bridge.
Based on that, Diponegoro University Civil Student Association organized the
International Bridge Design Competition 2018 with the theme "Effective, efficient and
precise International bridge design competition using deck type truss" with the aim of
improving student’s ability to compete and encourage students to have expertise in
designing bridges, especially deck type truss bridge to develop innovation in infrastructure
development.
