Delta configuration manages power transfer by three conductors whereas in

star we have typically a 4 wire system (star connected).

Transmission networks typically serve the purpose of power transfer between

load centres, ie not to an individual end load. Economics dictate that, if three
are sufficient, why have four conductors.

With availability of neutral conductor in distribution networks, single phase

loads can be readily serviced, as needed in typical residential/commercial loads
(washing machines, lighting, irons, refrigerators, single phase air conditioners
etc.). 4th conductor facilitates this.

There can be further nuances to this answer.

In bulk power transmission we use higher Voltages instead of higher current

if we use star connection then the LINE VOLTAGE is √3 times PHASE

VOLTAGES ie. VL = √3 VPH

so voltages is becomes increases for that conductor material required also

increases because conductor material required is directly proportional to the
system voltages its increase cost of system and less economic

so we use transmission side in delta connection because in Delta connection

LINE VOLTAGES and PHASE VOLTAGES both are equal

and we use Distribution side star connection because in distribution side we

distribute the 1-PHASE and 3-PHASE power

so we connect distribution side star connection with neutral

In transmission , we use Delta - star connection for step up transformer as

voltage is reduced by √3 times in star connection. As the insulation is designed
based on the voltage rating we can save the insulation cost by using such
connection. If it is a step down (but generally there will be step up condition) we
use star Delta connection, as voltage is low , we consider the conductor cost , for
Delta connection current is reduced by √3 times the line value. As conductor size
is directly proportional to current we generally prefer it.

But in the case of distribution system, we prefer Delta star connection so that we
can provide a neutral wire to the consumers end so that single phase load
connections can also be done.

Because on star connection we can have access of two kind of voltages, Line and
phase. While on delta we can only have access of phase voltage.
