CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION.

A. Background of The Study

English is the most important language in intenational

communication, English is a tool in communication both for spoken

and written. And English language that used to communicate by

people all over the world when the meet one another in every

international meeting, workshop, or conference. Beside is used at

science of knowledge, new invention in field of technology, medical,

etc. It means that student have to be able to understand and share their

ideas, information, thought, opinions, and feeling through spoken or

written texts. Therefore, English teaching and learning cover the for

languages skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing

skills.

In Indonesia as one of the developing countries has also set its

educational curriculum to include English as a foreign language which

is studying from elementary school up to the university level. The

researcher focuses on writing skill. Writing skill is one of the basic that

important to be learned by students. After the students learn this skill.

They can be able to exspress their idea to write. To write well, the

students mush have a good capabilities in writing. The students must

be able to organize the ideas, to make the sentences, to use

punctuations and spelling well. It is not easy to understand by students.

So , the teacher must have a good communication with the student and

they have a teaching media that can motivate the student to learn.

Based on the curriculum of vocational high school. There are

many kinds of the genre texts that teaching, such as narrative,

descriptive, recount, explanation, news items, report etc. One of there

texts that must be learned is narrative. The researcher found about the

general condition in teaching learning process. The students have

many difficulties in learning narrative text. Sometimes they feel bored

when the teacher give material about narrative in speaking lesson,

because the techniques that the teacher used in the class to be

monotonous. Some students affraid making mistakes in grammar, they

also still confused in choosing words because they poor vocabulary.

The student also have low motivation and less confidence in joining

writing class. The teacher usually discussed the text with the whole

class. Consequently, the student did not have opportunity to share or

discussed what they had write with their friend and could not

comprehend the text deeply.

Because of that problem, the researcher applies roundtable

technique in teaching narrative text solution. It can make them easier

and pleasure to learn narrative text. Roundtable technique also

motivates students to write good and make them able to discuss with

other friends. This strategy is believed as a way to promote positive

interaction among student that later can contribute to improvement of

writing skill. And also the important thing is that leaners can

participate actively, more confident, have many ideas of creative and

their motivation improve in joining reading class.

Based on the background above, the researcher is interested in

carrying out a study entitled “IMPROVING STUDENTS’

WRITING SKILL of NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH

ROUNTABLE TECHNIQUE at ELEVENTH GRADE of

Accounting 1 Class of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Sragen in

2018/2019 Academic Years”. The researcher hopes roundtable

technique can help the students to improve their skill in writing

narrative text.

B. Identification of The Problem

In this research, the researcher finds some problems in their

study which can be drawn as follows:

1. Classroom Situation

a. Some students feel bored when teacher give material in class.

b. Technique that teacher used in class to be monotonous

c. Students have not opportunity to share or discuss with friends

2. Students Achievement

a. The students still confused in choosing words because poor

vocab and they feel affraid making mistakes in grammar

b. The student have low motivation and less confidence in joining

writing class.

C. Limitation of The Problem

Based on the description above, the researcher focuses on

improving students writing skill of narrative text through roundtable

technique at eleventh grade of accounting 1 class of SMK

Muhammadiyah 4 Sragen in 2018/2019 academic years.

D. Statements of The Problem

In this research the reseracher has the problems:

1. Can Roundtable Technique improve the students’ writing skill of

narrative text at eleventh grade of accounting 1 class of SMK

Muhammadiyah 4 Sragen in 2018/2019 academic years?

2. How is the implementation of Roundtable Technique improving

students’ writing skill of narrative text at eleventh grade of

accounting 1 class of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Sragen in

2018/2019 academic years?

E. Objectives of The Study

Based on the formulation of the study mentioned above, the

researcher has some objectives as follows:

1. To explain that roundtable technique can improve the students’

writing skill of narrative text at eleventh grade of accounting 1

class of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Sragen in 2018/2019 academic

years?

2. To describe the implementation of roundtable technique to improve

students’ writing skill of narrative text at eleventh grade of

accounting 1 class of SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Sragen in 2018/2019

academic years?

F. Significance of The Research

The researcher hopes that research will be useful for English

teaching and learning.

1. Theoretically

The result of this research can give some contributions to

enlarge and to enrich the English language teaching methodologies

especially the knowledge about Roundtable Technique which is

hoped after reading this reaserch and give more understanding

about way to improve writing skill in narrative text and how appy

Roundtable Technique in Eanglish learning.

2. Practically

a. For the students

This research can help students’ to improve their writing

skill and students’will get the view writing skill for write better

esspecially in narrative text.

b. For the teacher

This research makes the teacher know the variation and

improve the quality of teaching learning process and then they

can choose media that make the students more interesting to

learn writing esspecially writing narrative text.

c. For the researcher

This research gives information or contribution to other

researchers and give a scientific research and also became the

resource for the other researcher in the next time.

d. For the school

The school can take positive thing from the research then it

is hoped that the school has motivation to increse the student

English skill with the other method.
