The Subculture of the Judaism

1. The person interviewed from the Jewish (religious) subcultural group was Mara

Kushner. Mara is part of Hillel at Westminster College. Hillel is the biggest ( global) on campus

Jewish organization. Hillel is a program all across the nation and it’s at more than 500 colleges

and universities. This year Mara will be on the Hillel for Utah student board as their Vice

President. Although she was not very religious growing up, Mara considers herself (along with

her family) as a Reform Jew, and she goes to a reformed synagogue whenever she gets the

chance to at college. She is also on the Westminster Cross country/Track team, which is my main

connection to her.

2. Mara has been a part of the Judaism religion since she was born but he my parents

didn’t force religion on her, and she got to choose it for herself. Her mom isn’t Jewish, but her

dad is, and they decided to raise her as Jewish. Her and her family aren’t very religious, and they

just go to the synagogue for the “high holidays.”She didn’t Bat Mitzvah (female coming of age

celebration within Judaism). She didn’t get involved with Judaism until she moved to Houston,

where she went to a private Jewish high school. Due to attending a Judaist school, she had to

keep Kosher, take a year of Hebrew, take Judaics (Jewish Studies) throughout all of highschool,

and celebrate Shabbat every Friday. Keeping Kosher at her school school meant having meat and

dairy days every other day during lunch. She also got all of the Jewish holidays off in order to

keep Kosher. Keeping kosher means that one avoids eating meat and dairy together, any non-

kosher animals, and only eating meat that was slaughtered a certain way and drained of its blood.

3. In Judaism, the main book of faith is called the Torah, which is the first five books of

scripture within the bible. Followers of this religion believe that there is only one God, similar to

Christianity. The main belief that sets Judaism apart from Christianity is that Jews believe that
Christ was not the Savior, and they are still awaiting their Savior to come to Earth. Unlike many

religions, Jews don’t believe that people must adopt their religion in order to be saved, rather

they believe that God judges based on your actions, and not by what organizations you are a part

of.

The main religious heads of Judaism are called Rabbis. Rabbis conduct religious

ceremonies and maintain the synagogues. Some of these religious ceremonies include Brit Milah

(circumcision), Bar and Bat Mitzvahs (male and female coming of age ceremonies), and

funerals. They also hold religious observations on Judaism holidays, such as the Sabbath, Rosh

Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Pesach, Shavuot, etc.

These main Jewish belief systems haven’t changed that much from United States

influences. Followers of Judaism have become more inclusive in their music, adopting a wider

variety of instruments and styles. Their belief systems have become a little bit more relaxed as

time has gone on, as followers are less strict in attendance to their synagogues and primarily

worship within the home now days. They are very accepting of other faiths and do not push their

religion onto others.

4. It is unsure exactly what the title of the song which was analyzed was, but it was titled

“WOW! Amazing New Hebrew Worship with English Subtitles Music Video from Israel!” on

Youtube. The channel/artist is ONE FOR ISRAEL Ministry. The genre was a contemporary

Hebrew religious hymn, but it had many pop music elements. It is reminiscent of Christian pop.

The form of verse and chorus. The melody had lots of ascension in the Contour. The movement

of the song was in conjunct. The song had a medium to large range. The song also had a short

phrase. The Rhythm was in quadruple. The harmony was in consonants and it was in major key.

The timbre included drums, vocals, best guitar, electric guitar, a 12-string guitar, a keyboard, and
violin. the texture was full and included homophony and homorhythm. The expression was

moderate and reference. My Impressions were positive. I liked the song, and even though I

couldn't understand the lyrics, I could still feel the intent behind them. the implications for

diversity show up as it is a modern Hebrew song praising their God. Religious/historical imagery

is present in the beginning and spread throughout the entirety of the music video. The entire song

is about praising God, and almost like a prayer, the artist asks to be filled with the love and fire

of the Spirit. In return, she will praise God and share his gospel.

The genre of this song is hard to pin down. It is a contemporary hebrew religious song,

but it sounds closer to the pop genre. It is very similar to the style of Christian pop. There is still

the presence of a traditional 12 stringed hebrew guitar and the song is sung in Hebrew, but it has

evolved from traditional folk music. Most traditional folk music belonging to the Hebrew/Jewish

faith are primarily vocals, with an occasional guitar accompaniment. It seems as if American soft

rock had some influence, as its primary instruments, electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums are

present in the hymn. The keyboard and violin are also outside influences that have made their

way into this subculture of Hebrew religion.
