DESIGN BRIEF

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

INTRODUCTION :

SOS Children's Villages is an independent, non-governmental international development organization

which has been working to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children since 1949.
It was founded by Hermann Gmeiner in Imst, Austria.

The design is an Orphanage for The SOS children´s village, the largest child welfare organization in the
world. The key objective is to question how architecture can affect the life of an orphan by creating
better living conditions for them until they find a permanent home by working on a family based home
concept. The final design output is an Orphanage in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, considering the key
parameters of Architecture that brings a change in the mindset of Orphans.

INTENT:

To design a village where homes interact and create a village ‘sense’. A ploy of subtle and spatial
connections initiating communal activities, mental, physical, emotional and social health and
anticipate intimacy, activities and memories.

The strong, educational and psychological principles underlying the SOS Children's Village idea
encourage the free development of every child's personality and talents by providing:

- The site and context will be prime generators of design and the positioning of building and spaces
between them shall need to be sensitively used to enhance the design.

- Love, security, continuity in the SOS-families.

- Sound schooling and training in local schools/workshops/college -encouragement in
community living.
- A wide variety of facilities for extra-curricular, recreational activities and hobbies.

This entire exercise shall be accomplished through study models as a process for design.
