Why so Many Offerings?
Ford transmissions are designed for use in many
different service environments and operating
conditions. Each transmission has its own set of
requirements for its fluid and each Motorcraft®
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) has specially
formulated properties to meet those requirements.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to
automatic transmission fluids.

Why doesn’t Motorcraft® Offer
Additives or Conditioners?
Ford engineers recommend NOT adding cleaners,
conditioners or other “performance enhancing”
products to the Automatic Transmission Fluid.
Specially designed performance additives are already
included in Motorcraft ATF formulations, therefore,
additional additives are not needed.
Aftermarket additives do not prolong the life of
the fluid and/or the transmission and can mask
symptoms without providing a cure.
What is Special About MERCON®
Transmission Fluids?
MERCON® transmission fluids undergo extensive
testing, both in the lab and in real-world conditions,
to ensure they provide optimum performance and
durability. MERCON® fluids are the only fluids
approved by Ford Motor Company for their
recommended application.
The different MERCON® fluids are unique fluids
formulated for specific applications. Their
specifications DO NOT overlap and use of fluids
other than specified may cause reduced functionality
or transmission damage. Remember – there is
no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to automatic
transmission fluids.
Motorcraft® MERCON® V ATF and Power Steering Fluid
• Premium-quality dual-use fluid for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles
• Can be used in vehicles requiring MERCON® V or MERCON® ATF
• Excellent performance in older electronically controlled automatic transmissions
• Manufactured with high-viscosity index, premium-quality, hydro-processed base oils and
specially designed performance additives
• Excellent shifting characteristics at high and low ambient temperatures
• Excellent thermal and oxidation resistance, as well as good low-temperature fluidity
• Helps protect against wear and inhibits the formation of gum, sludge, lacquer and foam
• Provides protection against rust and corrosion
• Also suitable for use as hydraulic oil in a wide variety of industrial applications that call for
an ISO 46 or SAE 20W viscosity grade hydraulic oil
• Do not use where MERCON® LV is specified

• Lower viscosity than MERCON® V for improved fuel economy
• Excellent performance in newer electronically controlled automatic transmissions
• Manufactured with high-viscosity index, premium-quality, hydro-processed base oils and

• Excellent shifting characteristics at high and low ambient temperatures
• Specially formulated to guard against transmission shudder
• Excellent thermal, oxidation and shear stability, as well as good low-temperature fluidity

Motorcraft® FNR5 ATF

(2006-2009 Fusion and Milan vehicles)
• Manufactured with high-quality, high-viscosity index base oils and specially designed
performance additives designed specifically to meet the frictional requirements of this transmission
• Provides optimal shift quality over a wide range of conditions, including at low temperatures

Motorcraft® Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid

• Motorcraft® Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid is specifically formulated for use in
the DPS6 PowerShift twin dry-clutch transmission
• Dual function fluid that protects gears, synchronizers and bearings, and also
hydraulically operates the transmission’s shift mechanisms
• Motorcraft® Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid is manufactured with synthetic base oils and
performance additives providing improved shifting at all ambient temperatures
• Protects against wear and corrosion, while low viscosity helps improve fuel economy
• Easily identified by its amber/brown color
• Tested and approved for the DP56 transmission only, use of other fluids can
affect performance

Motorcraft® Type F ATF and Power Steering Fluid

• Dual-use, high-static friction fluid developed for Ford automatic transmissions manufactured
during the 1970s and earlier
• Resists foaming and helps protect against rust, corrosion, wear and deposits
• Also recommended for power steering systems in a wide variety of 1995 or older model-year
Ford vehicles requiring Type F fluid
• Low viscosity also makes it suitable as a hydrostatic drive fluid for many farm
implements and certain industrial equipment applications

 Ford Motor Company Position Statement on
Universal Transmission Fluids
Ford Motor Company position on fluids that are claimed to be universal and work in all transmissions is
“This is not possible”. In 2008 Ford started manufacturing transmissions that were designed to function
on MERCON® LV which has a lower viscosity than MERCON® V, which was used in previous transmission
designs. The viscosity ranges of these two specifications are mutually exclusive (DO NOT overlap). Other
transmissions used in Ford vehicles, requiring other ATFs, have a similar viscosity to MERCON® V. Viscosity
is a critical property of an ATF. Using an ATF of the correct viscosity insures adequate fluid pressure and
oil film thickness which are necessary for the transmission to function correctly under all temperature
conditions. Using an ATF with the wrong viscosity will adversely affect the function, efficiency and
durability of the transmissions. Since MERCON® LV has a lower viscosity than MERCON® V it is impossible
have one fluid that will meet the viscosity requirements of both MERCON® LV and MERCON® V. Next are
the additive systems used. Advances in transmission materials to enhance shifting and durability required
different additive formulations to provide optimum performance and durability out of these materials.
Using a fluid licensed by Ford with of the correct viscosity and formulation is the only way to insure the
transmission will function correctly and provide the durability the customer expects.

Ford requires that service / aftermarket ATFs / power steering fluids be a Ford approved licensed fluid
in the case of MERCON®/ fluids, like MERCON® V or MERCON® LV. All products on the market that are
MERCON® licensed or have data that has been presented to Ford showing they meet the Ford Material
Specification are acceptable to be used to service the appropriate transmissions Ford, Mercury and Lincoln
branded vehicles. Fluids that are MERCON® licensed are evaluated by Ford engineering to insure that they
meet the appropriate MERCON® specification and contain the approved additive systems designated in
these specifications, designed for Ford transmissions. Unlicensed or unapproved fluids on the market that
claim they meet the requirements of these specifications cannot be guaranteed to contain the approved
additives or have successfully completed the appropriate testing necessary to demonstrate that the fluid
will function in the transmission properly and achieve the appropriate level of durability.

Using a Ford approved fluid is the only way to meet the warranty requirements for Ford vehicles,
protect the transmission from damage and insure the proper function of the transmission.
Most newer transmission fluid change intervals are 150,000 miles (check owner guide for correct interval).
To achieve this drain interval without issue Ford Motor Company recommends customers and
fleets use only a MERCON® licensed ATF in your Ford, Lincoln or Mercury transmission.
