Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]

Directions are for size x-small; changes
for sizes small, medium, large/x-large,
2x-large, 3x-large, and 4x/ 5x-large are
in parentheses.
Sweater measures 33¼ (38¾, 44, 50,
55½, 61, 66½)” [84.5 (98.5, 112, 127, 141,
155, 169) cm] in bust/ hip circumference,
6” [15 cm] in sleeve length, 19 (19,
19, 20¾, 22½, 22½, 24) [48.5 (48.5,
48.5, 52.5, 57, 57, 61) cm] in length
from shoulder to bottom. Pullover is
oversized in fit, shown in Small.
Pattern Notes
Top is worked front panel first, bottom
up, separated at neck for shaping,
rejoined and then top down for the
back. The sleeves are seamed, and
the lower portion is then stitched and
attached sideways as you go.
Special Stitches
Foundation Double Crochet (fdc):
First stitch: Ch 3 (does not count as
dc), yarn over, insert hook into 3rd ch
from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop,
yarn over and draw through 1 loop on
hook (this forms a chain, optional note:
placing a stitch marker can help see the
chain in the next stitch), yarn over and
draw through 2 loops on hook twice
(this forms the double crochet)
Next stitch: yarn over, insert hook into
bottom of previous stitch (in the “chain”
space), yarn over and pull up a loop,
yarn over and draw through 1 loop on
hook (forming a chain), yarn over and
draw through 2 loops on hook twice
(forming the next double crochet)
Stacked Double Crochet (stacked dc):
Sc in stitch indicated, insert hook behind
leftmost vertical bar of sc just made and
pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2
loops on hook.
Single Crochet 2 together (sc2tog):
Insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over
and pull up a loop. Insert hook in next
stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a
loop. Yarn over and draw through all 3
loops on hook.
FRONT PANEL
Row 1 (RS): (Note: Leave a long tail of
at least 18” [46 cm] before slipknot.)
Fdc 94 (103, 112, 121, 130, 139, 148).
Place marker in 20th dc from either end
to mark sleeves. (Note: do not move
marker up with row progression.) Turn-
94 (103, 112, 121, 130, 139, 148) dc.
Row 2: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in next
3 dc, *ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 2,

place marker in 58 (64, 73, 76, 82, 85,
91) dc to mark neck opening.

NECK OPENING
Row 1 (WS, RS, WS): Stacked dc in first
dc, dc in next 3 dc, [ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in

3 (4, 5) times, [ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next
dc] twice, leave remaining sts unworked.
Turn- 37 (46, 55) sts.

Row 2: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in next
3 dc, *ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 2,
skip 2 dc, dc in next 4 dc; repeat from *
across. Turn.
Row 3: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in next
3 dc, *ch 2, skip ch-2 space, dc in next
dc, ch 2, skip ch-2 space, dc in next 4
dc; repeat from * across. Turn.
Row 4: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in each
stitch across. Turn.
Rows 5-22 (5-22, 5-22, 5-25, 5-28, 5-28,
5-31): Repeat Rows 2-4. Fasten off, leave
long tail of at least 18” [46 cm].
FINISHING
Weave in all loose ends. Lay project
out to schematic size and spray with
water to block. Allow to dry. Holding RS
together, with long tails and tapestry
needle, using mattress stitch, seam
underarm sleeves to markers, remove
markers.
Neck Edging
Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn in
marked dc of neck opening with slip st,
evenly sc along neck edge in row ends
to corner, sc in each dc across back
neck to corner, evenly sc along neck
edge in row ends to corner, sc in ea dc
across front neck to corner, evenly sc
along neck edge in row ends to first sc.
Do not join. Do not turn.
Row 2: *Sc in each sc across to 1 st
before corner, sc2tog over next 2 sc;
repeat from * around, sc in ea sc to end.
Do not join. Do not turn.
Row 3: Sc in each sc around, join with
slip st to first sc. Fasten off.
Weave in end.
Sleeve Edging
Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn at
underarm seam with slip st, sc in each
dc around. Do not join. Do not turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc around. Do not
join. Do not turn.
Row 3: Sc in each sc around, join with
slip st to first sc. Fasten off. Weave in
ends.
Lower Body Edging
(Note: You will be working
perpendicular to the sweater joining as
you go.)
Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn at
underarm seam with slip st, ch 20. Turn
Row 2: Stacked dc in first ch from
hook, dc in each ch across, skip 1 dc on
body, slip st in next 2 dc on body (joins
edging to body and acts as a turning
chain). Turn – 20 dc.
