1 Introduction
ATMdesk is an independent diagnostic solution for NCR 56xx, NCR Personas (58xx),
NCR EasyPoint (53xx/55xx) and NCR SelfServ (66xx) ATMs.
ATMdesk line consists of several distinct products. All products share the same user
interface and features.
This manual explains important points you need to know while using your ATMdesk and
then lists devices and tests currently supported by ATMdesk.
ATMdesk/Field is not installed on the ATM's hard disk and it leaves no traces within the
ATM. It does not depend on the software installed on the ATM's hard disk either.
ATMdesk/Field uses a dedicated hardware key (an USB/PS2 Dongle or a Smart Card) to hold
your ATMdesk/Field license. The key must be present at startup to enable unrestricted use
of ATMdesk/Field.
The actual option (/Pro or /2) is selected on start-up according to the license purchased and
loaded in your ATMdesk Key. The software package is the same in all cases.
Please refer to ATMdesk/Field Setup and Handling Manual for details specific to
ATMdesk/Field usage.
ATMdesk/Repair uses a dedicated USB-SDC adapter to connect SDC modules to the PC. The
adapter also holds your ATMdesk/Repair license and must be present at all times to enable
unrestricted use of ATMdesk/Repair, even if testing only USB or RS232 devices.
The actual option (/Repair, /Repair Lite or /Plus), as well as module types for Lite, is selected
at the time of purchase (appropriate type of USB-SDC adapter is supplied). The software
package is the same in all cases.
Please refer to ATMdesk/Plus Installation and Handling Manual for details specific to
ATMdesk/Plus usage.
1.3 ATMdesk/Demo
ATMdesk/Demo is a function-limited version of ATMdesk/Pro. If you wish to quickly see
what ATMdesk looks like and what it is good for, you can freely download ATMdesk/Demo
from our website www.atmdesk.com.
2 User Interface
ATMdesk is controlled through a hierarchical menu system. Typical menu screen is shown
below:
• Digits 0-9 are used for menu item selection or digital entry. If information spans
across several pages, 0 and 9 are used to scroll up and down. Current/Total page
counter is displayed in the top right corner.
• FDKs (buttons along both sides of the screen) usage is context-dependent; current
FDK assignment is displayed next to the button.
• Bottom LEFT FDK is commonly used for negative-style actions (like BACK or CANCEL).
CANCEL/CLEAR/ESC keys on the main keypad can be always used instead of this FDK.
• Bottom RIGHT FDK is commonly used for positive-style actions (like CONFIRM or OK).
ENTER key on the main keypad can be always used instead of this FDK.
An actions can be also selected by a mouse click (ATMdesk/Repair only) or by ATM touch
screen, if present (ATMdesk/Field only), or by a standard PS/2 or USB computer keyboard, if
connected (all versions).
ATMdesk/Field can use either front (Customer Monitor/Keyboard) or rear (EOP or GOP/COP
– Extended or Graphic/Compact Operator Panel) ATM interface. If an operator panel is
found on ATMdesk startup, rear interface is activated automatically to facilitate work on
through-the wall ATMs where engineer usually stays at rear. Active ATMdesk interface can
be changed (transferred) via menu whenever required.
BOP (Basic Operator Panel) cannot be used as rear interface; however it can be tested as an
ATM device. On ATMs with BOP ATMdesk can only use front interface.
• Supervisor Functions provide operations like interface transfer (front to rear or vice
versa), device re-scanning and so on.
• Device Diagnostics provide access to detailed device tests. Each device found by
ATMdesk will be listed in this menu.
• Confidence Tests provide access to quick device checks. Each device found by
ATMdesk will be listed in this menu. Here you can check if a device or the whole ATM
is operational without going into technical details.
• Logs and Tallies provide access to ATM Error Logs and Device Tallies maintained by
the ATM platform (ATMdesk/Field only).
To exit from ATMdesk select EXIT and confirm your choice. ATMdesk/Repair will close;
ATMdesk/Field will close and then reboot the ATM.
• Restart ATMdesk repeats full device scanning process. Use this option if a device was
reconnected to another port or if a new device was connected.
CAUTION: ATM devices are generally NOT designed for hot swap.
Before connecting/disconnecting a device, please power it OFF.
• Restart ATMdesk (Quick) repeats device scanning process but only looks for devices
discovered during last full scan. Use this option if the same device was reconnected
to the same port. Quick restart option is significantly faster.
• Transfer Interface swaps user interface from front to rear or vice versa. This option is
only available if rear operator interface is present (ATMdesk/Field only).
• Dump Debug Info stores internal ATMdesk session information on a floppy or USB
disk. If you encounter a problem with ATMdesk, please use this option to save dump
file on a blank floppy or USB disk and then send the file along with the issue
description to the ATMdesk Support Team (mail to support@atmdesk.com).
IMPORTANT: The file saved using this option is NOT ATM Error Log. It is
an internal ATMdesk debug log required by the Support Team to
investigate the problem in case of abnormal ATMdesk behavior.
Each Device Diagnostics submenu provides access to all available tests for one device.
Diagnostic output from a test such as MSTATUS and MDATA is displayed in the same format
as in NCR diagnostics. MSTATUS and MDATA bits and bytes are decoded and displayed in
clear text next to numerical values. Whenever available, additional information from device
(not part of MDATA) is displayed, such as track data from a magnetic card read test:
Main diagnostic outcome is the MSTATUS, shown in yellow at the top of the screen. Even if
MSTATUS is 0 (No Error), MDATA may still contain additional information, such as sensor
status or command just executed. In this case MDATA will be decoded and displayed; this
does NOT indicate an error condition.
Control menu sets up how diagnostic tests are performed and how test results are logged.
• Loop set to ON enables test looping and can be used to exercise device stability.
• Logging set to ON starts accumulating test results which can be printed later.
• Halt on Error set to ON forces test loop to halt whenever an error is detected.
• Print Log prints accumulated test results (see [2.6]).
• Clear Log clears accumulated test results after a confirmation.
Two most commonly used options (Loop and Logging) are also mirrored directly on all
Device Diagnostics screens and can be toggled by pressing appropriate FDK.
Confidence Tests can be run for one, several, or all devices. Selected devices are marked by
“+” sign on the left. You can select/deselect all devices at once using appropriate FDK
buttons. To run the tests on selected devices press bottom right FDK or ENTER.
During the test sequence you may be prompted for necessary actions (insert a card, press a
key and so on). A result screen is displayed at completion for each selected device:
When several devices have been tested, first screen shows summary information.
You have an option to print or save confidence test report (see [2.6]).
During the first pass you may be prompted for necessary actions (insert a card, press a key
and so on). Second pass and beyond are designed to run unattended, requiring no user
intervention. Some tests which make no sense in unattended mode (e.g. key pressing) are
only executed once during the first pass.
When all the passes are completed (or looping is cancelled by user), summary statistics is
displayed, showing how many times each test failed:
• View Error Logs (Hardware, Communications and Software) displays ATM Error Logs.
Hardware logs can be further filtered by service (device) name; you can browse
complete log (all devices) or only records for selected device.
• View Tallies displays tallies (statistic counters accumulated as device operates) for all
devices discovered during initial scanning process. Tallies are maintained separately
by ATM Platform and by ATMdesk itself; these two groups are displayed in two
separate columns. First column shows tallies maintained by the ATM Platform while
second column shows tallies accumulated by ATMdesk during current session.
• Clear Error Logs clear selected ATM Error Log after a confirmation.
• Clear Tallies clear selected ATM or ATMdesk tallies after a confirmation
While viewing, you have an option to print or save Error Logs and Tallies (see [2.6]).
When saving to a file in ATMdesk/Field, you can use either floppy disk or USB drive; insert
the disk before selecting “Save to Disk” option.
To save to a file in ATMdesk/Repair you need a “virtual printer” service like Adobe PDF
Writer, Microsoft Office Document Writer or similar installed.
Device Diagnostics Reports are printed from Control Menu (see [2.3.1]).
The reports can be printed in two modes – brief and detailed (the above picture shows a
brief report). The only difference between detailed and brief report is that detailed report
always prints additional information (MSTATUS/MDATA) regardless of the test result.
When printing Confidence Test reports in ATMdesk/Field, results for each device are printed
on separate page. If several devices have been tested, overall test summary across all
devices is printed on the first page. No additional information (such as MSTATUS/MDATA) is
printed even if a test fails; use Device Diagnostics menus for printing detailed test reports.
When printing Confidence Test reports in ATMdesk/Repair, the printout is similar to Device
Diagnostics Report (see [2.6.1]).
Devices of the same type (e.g. card readers, dispensers, encryptors and so on) are grouped
and handled together by the same set of tests. Tests which only apply to some device
variants (e.g. only to motorized readers but not to manual insertion readers) are only
available when appropriate device variant is present.
3.1.1 Identify
Display encryptor information such as:
MDATA byte represents keypad matrix code (hardware position code) of the key pressed:
If this test passes, the encryptor is in good working order and can be used in an ATM. If this
test fails, the encryptor is locked due to possible tampering or dead battery or other reason.
Encryptors are usually not repairable but Reinit Security Module test can be tried as a last
resort.
This test is not available for EPPs with enhanced security DAPIs (DAPI7, DAPI8, DAPI9, INTL,
SWI, and FRA). Use Secure Key Loading test instead.
This test is not available for latest German OPT EPPs (DAPI2.35/GER__31 and later).

This test is not available for latest German OPT EPPs (DAPI2.35/GER__31 and later).
IMPORTANT: Depending on EPP DAPI version, this test may pass even if
the removal switches are actually not closed. This is normal and simply
means that this version of DAPI ignores removal switches state.
CAUTION: Using this function on a live ATM in the field will prevent
putting ATM back into service, until ATM owner reloads new encryption
keys into the EPP!!!
Once clearing procedure is completed, there’s an option to print the report for audit
purposes.

Confidence Test Report also includes encryptor serial numbers, DAPI variant and other
encryptor specific details.
3.2.1 Identify
Display card reader information such as:
• Firmware version
• Readable and writable magnetic tracks
• Hardware options (Smart/EMV, CIM/MM, CROPF)
Depending on reader variant settings can be non-persistent and not retained during power-
downs. Even if they are retained, ATM Platform (Aptra) always writes their own values as
configured by SysApp menus; therefore settings configured by ATMdesk should be considered
temporary and valid only while device is operated by ATMdesk.
The test is only available for motorized readers or DIP readers with latch.
These tests are only available for readers capable of reading appropriate tracks.
IMPORTANT: If the test fails, track data may be left corrupted. Do not
use any live card for write test.
These tests are only available for readers capable of writing appropriate tracks.
This test is only available for readers capable of writing all 3 tracks.
For DASH and USB DIP readers this test exercises card latch solenoid. For DASH reader a card
must be inserted in the reader for this test to run. This test does not report any errors and
requires visual observation.

Confidence test report also includes firmware version (IMCRW only) and other reader
specific details.
3.3 Anti-Skimmers
ATMdesk supports the following variants of Anti-Skimmers:
Skimming Protection Solution (SPS) is also known as Intelligent Fraud Detection 2 (IFD2) or
Anti Skimming Module (ASM).
3.3.1 Identify
Display device information such as device variant, serial number and version information.
• Jammer Sensitivity - amount of capacitive sensor drift that causes jammer activation.
Valid range is 50-1000 (the less the value the more sensitive it is).
• Jammer Timeout - amount of time in seconds the jammer remains activated. Valid
range is 1-10.
Configured settings are persistent and retained during power-downs. However, ATM
Platform (Aptra) always writes their own values as configured by SysApp menus; therefore
settings configured by ATMdesk should be considered temporary and valid only while device
is operated by ATMdesk.
3.3.3 Rebaseline
Calculate current capacitive sensor “zero level” (baseline) and write it to the calibration file
on the ATM HDD.
This value will be eventually used to detect environmental changes to the card entry area
(skimmers, foreign objects and so on). Therefore the card entry area must be it its
“operational” configuration before commencing this test. In particular, the following must
be ensured:
• Fascia is closed and aligned and all devices surrounding card reader (e.g. receipt
printer) are racked in, including card reader itself.
• All cables are correctly attached and aligned.
• There are no modifications to the card reader entry slot (no skimmers or other
fraudulent devices are installed).
• There are no foreign objects in or near card entry slot.
• There are no persons near card entry slot (e.g. no hand is approaching)
Measured baseline needs to be written to a file on the ATM HDD for future use by ATM
Platform (Aptra). It is therefore mandatory that ATMdesk is run on an ATM with Aptra
currently installed on the HDD and that HDD is accessible (i.e. not encrypted).
Jammer and metal/magnet detection are only available on SPS variants for IMCRW
(Personas or SelfServ).
Jammer can be activated by approaching hand or other object; when active, an audible tone
can be heard.
Jammer alert can be triggered by inserting metal or magnet in the card entry slot.
This test is only available for SPS variants for IMCRW (Personas or SelfServ).

Dispense, Stack and Present tests require that one of the cassettes or the purge bin have
been reinserted to confirm that user has access to the inside of the safe. If not done prior to
test, the user will be allowed up to 30 seconds to reinsert a cassette before the test fails.
Dispense, Stack and Present tests are not available if the Key Device (which was used to
supply ATMdesk License at startup) was configured in Safe Mode (see ATMdesk/Field Setup
and Handling Manual for details).
Extended cassette types are supported if the dispenser recognizes them. However, for most
dispensers only 4 groups of cassette tallies can be maintained by the ATM at a time (known
as “virtual” cassette types). When introducing cassette type not previously used in an ATM,
the tallies may become invalid and should be discarded or cleared.
Most ATMs are equipped with interlock on the dispenser racks, disconnecting AC power
when dispenser is pulled out from the safe. The interlock must be closed manually when
dispenser is tested in pulled out state.
When dispenser diagnostics menu or confidence test menu is entered for the first time,
secure connection is established (PDEE/SDEE and USB dispensers only). In some cases
establishing secure connection may require operator assistance to open the safe and toggle
security switch or reinsert a cassette as prompted; failure to do so within one minute will
leave dispenser unconnected. Unconnected dispenser will allow only limited set of tests.
3.6.1 Identify
Display firmware version numbers, dispense protection level (SDC/RS232/USB or
Logical/Physical) and encryption type (standard/enhanced) where applicable.
3.6.2 Clear
Move any bills left in the dispenser transport into the purge bin and clear any other error
condition.
3.6.5 Dispense
Dispense bills (as set by Set Notes) from each cassette type installed, equivalent to Stack and
Present in one operation.
This test is not available if the Key Device was configured in Safe Mode.
3.6.6 Stack
Pick bills (as set by Set Notes) from each cassette type installed and stack them for
presentation.
This test is not available if the Key Device was configured in Safe Mode.
3.6.7 Present
Open the shutter and move previously stacked bills to the exit slot where they can be
removed; the bills are expected to be taken within 15 seconds.
This test is not available if the Key Device was configured in Safe Mode.
Current bill sizes, singularities and presentation order are shown on the screen for all
configured cassette types.
To learn bill parameters automatically select desired cassette type or select “All Cassettes”.
Uninstalled cassette types are skipped; for installed cassette types you will be asked for
number of bills to pick (by default 40 for stacking dispensers and 70 for spray dispensers).
To enter bill parameters manually select appropriate menu item. You will be asked for size
and singularity values for all configured cassette types; you can press Enter to keep current
values which you don’t want to change.
New bill sizes, singularities and bill presentation order will be displayed on the screen but
not saved until you exit the Learn Bills menu. On exit a prompt will displayed to confirm
saving of modified parameters.
3.6.9 Self-Test
Pick one bill from each cassette installed and move them to the purge bin. Exit Shutter (on
stacking dispensers) or Divert Gate (on spray dispensers) is also exercised.
On P86/NID and USB dispensers the bill alignment mechanism also checked. It is moved to
home position if it’s not at home; then it’s moved to the smallest bill position and back to
the home position.

Most ATMs are equipped with BNA interlock, which disconnects BNA power supply
completely when safe door is opened and/or BNA is pulled out from the safe. The interlock is
typically located near BNA racks and must be closed manually when safe door is opened
and/or BNA is pulled out from the safe. Because all power is disconnected by the interlock,
the BNA will be effectively switched OFF and will not be discovered by ATMdesk if interlock
is not closed.
3.9.1 Identify
Display information about device type and firmware version.
3.9.2 Accept
Enable BNA for bills entry. A bunch of bills is expected to be inserted within 15 seconds.
Unrecognized bills (if any) are automatically ejected and a prompt to take them is displayed.
3.9.3 Encash

Dispense, Stack, Present and Test Cash Units tests require that Dispense Enable (ST) switch
on the upper PCB has been kept pressed for several seconds to confirm that user has access
to the inside of the safe. If not done prior to test, the user will be allowed up to 30 seconds
to press the switch before the test fails.
Dispense, Stack, Present and Test Cash Units tests are not available if the Key Device (which
was used to supply ATMdesk License at startup) was configured in Safe Mode (see
ATMdesk/Field Setup and Handling Manual for details).
3.10.1 Identify
Display device information such as:
Normally for GBNA/GBRU installed and operated in an ATM in the field these settings are
loaded by ATM Platform/Application and need not be changed. However, this menu can be
useful for ATMdesk/Repair when testing standalone GBNA/GBRU in the workshop.
GBNA/GBRU handles cassettes by their positions, NOT by their IDs. Each position can be
assigned zero, one or more denominations to deposit and/or dispense. Only recycle type
cassettes assigned exactly one denomination can be used to dispense bills. Different bill
generations/publications (e.g. all variants of $20 bills) are considered one denomination and
can be mixed in the same recycle cassette.
• When depositing bills, if there is more than one cassette accepting given
denomination, these cassettes are tried in order of their priorities. First available (e.g.
not full) cassette will be the one to store the bill to.
• When dispensing bills, if there is more than one recycle cassette with given
denomination, these cassettes are tried in order of their priorities. First available (e.g.
not empty) cassette will be the one to pick the bill from.
• When dispensing bills, different denominations are picked in order of their cassette
priorities. Is therefore possible to set up bill presentation order so that bigger notes
are dispensed first and go to the bottom of the bunch presented.
ECB6 mode (named after Article 6 of European Central Bank (ECB) Council Regulation
1338/2001) enables detection of counterfeit and suspected bills if the template currently
loaded in the GBNA/GBRU supports such detection.
Configured settings are persistent and retained during power-downs. However, ATM
Platform (Aptra) always writes their own values as configured by SysApp menus and ATM
Application; therefore settings configured by ATMdesk should be considered temporary and
valid only while device is operated by ATMdesk.
This test is only available for GBNA/GBRU with removable (3-area) bin.
3.10.6 Accept
Enable GBNA/GBRU for bills entry. A bunch of bills is expected to be inserted within 15
seconds. Bills are sorted according to validation results:
3.10.7 Encash
Move accepted bills from escrow to the cassettes according to their denominations and
priorities. Bills are sorted according to re-validation results:
3.10.8 Refund
Move previously accepted bills from escrow to the exit slot where they can be removed. If
presented bills are not taken within 15 seconds, they are retracted into reject area.
3.10.10 Dispense
Dispense bills (as set by Set Notes) from each cassette type installed, equivalent to Stack and
Present in one operation.
This test is not available if the Key Device was configured in Safe Mode.
3.10.11 Stack
Pick bills (as set by Set Notes) from each cassette type installed and stack them in escrow
for presentation.
This test is not available if the Key Device was configured in Safe Mode.
3.10.12 Present
Move previously stacked bills from escrow to the exit slot where they can be removed. If
presented bills are not taken within 15 seconds, they are retracted into reject area.
This test is not available if the Key Device was configured in Safe Mode.

3.11.1 Identify
Display device information such as (depending on device type):
If a document is already inside then for a single-feed device it will be re-scanned; for a multi-
feed device (SCPM or SDM with ERBM) more document(s) are expected to be inserted.
For SDM currency and value for each detected banknote will be displayed.
3.11.3 Eject
Open the shutter and move the document to the entry slot for removal. The document is
expected to be removed within 15 seconds.
For a multi-feed device (SCPM or SDM with ERBM), all cheques currently present in Infeed,
Main Transport and Rebunch Module are ejected in that order. Every presented document
or bunch of documents is expected to be removed within 15 seconds.
Before ejecting from rebunch, one cheque is moved there from escrow (if escrow is not
empty). Please note that the eject test does not attempt to return all cheques from escrow
via rebunch due to uncertainty of remaining rebunch capacity. If you need to return all
cheques from the escrow, first perform REBUNCH test manually until escrow is empty or
rebunch is full.
3.11.4 Endorse
Take one cheque from the transport (or one cheque from the escrow for SCPM or SDM with
ERBM) and print with “ABCD…WXYZ” on the rear of the cheque.
For CPM2/3/4 the cheque then remains in the transport; for SCPM and SDM it is moved to
capture bin 1.
For a multi-cheque device (SCPM with ERBM), one cheque from Main Transport, Escrow or
Infeed is captured by trying the modules in that order; operation stops as soon as first
cheque is captured.
Please note that the capture test does not attempt to capture all cheques from anywhere in
the transport. If you need to do so, perform CLEAR test.
This test is only available for stacking and powered pocket bin modules.
This test is only available for three-bin powered pocket bin modules.
3.11.10 Rebunch
Move one document from the escrow to the rebunch. This test is only offered for multi-feed
device (SCPM or SDM with ERBM).
3.11.11 Clear
Move all documents from anywhere in the transport to the Reject Bin (bin 2), if present,
otherwise to bin 1. For SDM documents will be transported to Retract Bin 1.
For a multi-feed device (SCPM or SDM with ERBM), all cheques from Main Transport, Escrow
and Infeed are captured in that order.
For SCPM (but not SDM) cheques already stacked in the rebunch cannot be captured; if the
rebunch is not empty, the test will fail after clearing all other transport areas. If you need to
clear cheques from rebunch, perform EJECT test.
For SDM cheques from rebunch are first moved to escrow via infeed and then cleared from
there.
For a multi-feed device (SCPM or SDM with ERBM), the image of the last scanned cheque is
displayed.
Please note than orientation detection is not performed, misoriented documents are not
rotated and the image is displayed exactly as inserted and scanned.
Please note that codeline recognition is done in software and therefore decoding results and
misread ratio produced by ATMdesk may differ from what would be produced by ATM
software.
Please also note that ATMdesk makes no attempt to compensate for poor quality MICR data
or misoriented cheques by applying any OCR-related technologies. Doing so would simply
conceal possibly malfunctioning MICR hardware.
3.11.16 Reset

This test is only available for SCPM or SDM with Stacking Bin.

Customer and Operator Display tests are only available in ATMdesk/Field. The display being
tested will be the one currently used as ATMdesk interface (Front resp. GOP/COP).
• Linearity Test
FSI is simply an ordinary USB PC keyboard and cannot be tested by ATMdesk, but can be
used as an input device to control ATMdesk user interface.

On some ATMs Remote Relay can be used to control safe door electronic lock. Therefore the
test requires that the user confirms access to the safe by opening safe door; this is monitored
using Safe Door Alarm sensor. If the safe door was not opened before the test, the user will
be given 20 seconds to do so before the test fails. On ATMs without Alarm harness safe door
alarm sensor is always active and therefore Remote Relay test is always enabled.
ATMdesk is unable to detect which MEIs are actually employed in a particular ATM.
Therefore all possible MEIs (MCRW, Cash, Receipt, Statement, Passbook, Depository,
Envelope and Extra) are offered for testing.
3.19 Alarms
ATMdesk supports the following variants of Alarms:
Although SDC Mode Switch may be physically located on the Operator Panel (BOP/EOP), it
uses dedicated wires (not SDC bus) to connect to the ATM PC Core (SSPB/SSPA board). Due
to this fact Mode Switch tests are not available in ATMdesk/Repair when testing EOP/BOP
devices.
If the ATM is equipped with Auto-Supervisor Feature, the switch is actually replaced by an
interlock operated when ATM cabinet is opened and closed. On these ATMs you will need to
exercise the interlock instead of the switch itself.
