Air Pollution and People

Cars should be controlled because the health effect of air pollution impacts human lives.

Air pollutions remains a serious problem around the world that is a threat to the health of human,

animals, and vegetation. Despite attempt to reduce the problem through environmental

regulations and policies as well as advancement in technology, man-made pollution continues to

permeate the air industrialized areas and results in health problems such as asthma, cancer, and

emphysema.

In 1999 my brother was working in a city od Khartoum where the burning of coal in his

company was increasing. Coal was used in factories and used to heat homes at winter time. Coal,

when burned, makes a lot of smoke, which makes the air very dirty. Air pollution was becoming

a big problem, especially when the weather was foggy. With foggy conditions and light winds,

the smoke or air pollution covered the whole city and wouldn’t dissipate. Smoke and fog

together create smog. Smog was a big problem in the winter because of the cold weather; more

coal was burnt to warm house and this made more smoke. When smog was stuck over a city, it

become hard to breathe and see clearly. Five years after 1999, about 50 people died from

different causes due to air pollution at my brothers’ company. My brother did not die but got

asthma.

In our society, many people consider health, convention, and cost when they make life

choices. Many people don’t even know what they are really breathing. Many people don’t know

where their air came from or what exactly is in it. Among the best choices in reducing air

pollution is using a cleaner coal and switching to other fuels such as gases in your home. If you

breathe dirty air, you are more likely to develop health problems and become ill. Plants and

animals need clean air too. A lot of the things that make our lives more comfortable like cars,

electricity, and heating create bad gases that make the air dirty. The problem of air pollution

starts with the burning of coal in homes and factories. Factories use tall chimneys so that the

smog would go high up in the sky and no longer cover cities. Car exhausts eject a lot of dirty

gases which will create air pollution. These gases can be dangerous for children and can poison

people.

Two major gases that cause air pollution come from vehicles or factories. Carbon

monoxide is a gas that pollutes the air and is mainly released by cars and other vehicles. It has no

smell. Nitrogen oxides are emitted from vehicles, like cars and trucks. During rush hour periods,

a lot more is released in the air. Nitrogen oxides are also emitted from power stations.

Hydrocarbons are produced when petrol is not fully burnt. They are one of the causes of modern-

day smog. Another gas that impacts our environment by causing air pollution is Sulphur dioxide

which comes from factories and has no color. It causes acid rain when mixing with water in the

air.

Some say they won’t buy new cars and because they are expensive. I say that their

investment makes it worth to buy expensive car. In addition to that, people may boast about

having the cheapest car in their own hand, but it’s clear enough from them to understand that

having a new car is the best way to reduce smog. “some environmental research organizations

That ten percent includes most of the order cars” (Kidd teal). If you agree with this idea,

then you must make a conscious choice about the car you drive. Every time you make a
Abdalla 3

purchase, you are telling businesses and us that you value that method of growing, supporting

your community, and protecting the environment. Even if you buy an electrical car, it’s not a

perfect answer, since electric power generation also produces some pollution. My friend who has

a lot of experience as a mechanic told me that if car engines are redesigned, the use of alternate

fuels such as methane could improve the situation because gases like methane produce much less

pollution than other fuels. Or you can use pure hydrogen.

Another way of creating air pollution is the amount of tourism. Tourism industries that

are available in most countries are one of largest cause of air pollution going on in the world.

With the increasing number of tourists, more and more people will have the desire to fly. We do

not know the specific number of people that are willing to travel for tourism around the world

yearly, but we are quite sure their number will impact global warming by causing emissions.

This step will generate air pollution which is something we don’t hope to hear about. We are not

saying people shouldn’t travel to enjoy their time, but they need to create safer environment. If

we do not change our manner of travel, tourism will cause tragedies in the climate changes that

will keep coming to the environment.

The health effects of air pollution come through the practice of people because half of the

people around the world depend on dung, wood, crop waste or coal to meet whatever comes to

their basic energy need (Shang) 54. Cooking and heating with such solid fuels on open fires or

stoves without chimneys leads to indoor air pollution. This indoor smoke contains a range of

health-damaging pollutants, including dust particles that can penetrate deep into lungs.

According to the 2004 assessment of the international energy agency “in poorly ventilated

dwelling, indoor smoke can exceed acceptable levels for tiny particles in outdoor air in about

100-fold” (76). Exposure is also always high among the children and women who spend most of
Abdalla 4

their time at fireplace. In addition to that, the use of polluting fuels poses a major problem on the

poor families in developing countries. The dependence on such fuels is both a cause and result of

poverty as poor households often do not have enough resources to offer cleaner, more efficient

fuels and appliances. Reliance on simple household fuels and appliances can compromise health

and then hold back economic development, creating empty cycle of poverty.

Air pollution is dangerous to the life of animals and plants. Gases such as carbon dioxide,

water vapor, and nitrous oxide are called greenhouse gases. They create activities that put

animals and plants life at risk pollution can lead to global warming. Global warming causes sea

rise, covering lowland areas, flooding animal habitats and plants, thus leads plants to die (Tian).

If plants die, animals will lose their source of food with their place to live. Serious effects of

greenhouse gases can also kill plants and animals because it causes air pollution. When the air is

heavily polluted, it creates acid rain that contaminates the soil, preventing plants from growing.

Hampering the ability of plants to grow in their proper way will make plants susceptible to

diseases or death, especially when carbon dioxide is formed. As plants are the most important

organism for absorbing carbon dioxide, fewer plants indicate that there is more carbon dioxide in

the atmosphere. Moreover, the levels of greenhouse gases are increased.

Factories are producing multiple cars that are causing air pollution. Drivers, instead of

using unleaded petrol, because of the cheaper price. Another problem is that there are no filters

in factories, factory managers save their money; they do not care about smog, cancer, nature or

what can happen to it. Our careless actions affect the environment and give us a reason to find

the best solution to reverse these problems. We need to encourage and persuade everyone to

know what they really breathe, health impact of air pollution, factors of greenhouse gases, how

to recycle their old things, and make a few changes to their lifestyle. If we understand that coal is
Abdalla 5

making air pollution and destroying our environment including animals and plants, I would

suggest that people will discover new cars which will go on the water.

This car is Tasla found in 2003, is an american. The good think about Tasla is not cause any

problems to environment. On Tasla there is no fuel tank. There is a very large batfery pack,

which contains the energy storage cells as well as a cooling system and more electronic controls,

if Tesla is a cheap car we should buy it. But its expensive cars.

Coal contains sulfur and other elements, including dangerous metals such as mercury,

lead and arsenic that escape into air when coal is burned. Burning coal also produces particulates

that increase air pollution and health dangers. Burning coal emits large amount of carbon dioxide

into the atmosphere. This picture telling us air pollution definition
