STARTING - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________

1. _______
General
(Ref. Fig. 001)
The starting system of the engine utilizes pressurized air to drive a
turbine at high speed. This turbine applies a torque to the engine high
pressure rotor system through a reduction gear in the (starter) turbine and
through the engine accessory drive system.
The air which is necessary to drive the starter comes from :
- the APU,
- or the second engine,
- or a ground power unit.
The starter air supply is controlled by a starter shutoff valve (SOV)
pneumatically operated and electrically controlled. The SOV has a manual
override capability which permits the valve to be opened or closed in case
of failure of the electrical control.
The starter shutoff valve closes when the N2 speed reaches 50 percent.
The starter centrifugal clutch disengages when N2 speed is higher than 50
percent.
Engine starting is controlled from the ENG start panel 115VU located on
center pedestal and ENG/MAN START switch on the overhead panel.
The starting sequence may be interrupted at any time by placing the MASTER
control lever in OFF position which overrides the FADEC. When the MASTER
control lever is in OFF position the HP fuel shutoff valve is closed and the
engine is stopped.
Two procedures are applicable for engine starting :

A. Normal Starting Procedure (automatic)

(Ref. 74-31-00)
The starting sequence is fully controlled by the FADEC and is selected
when the ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN/START selector switch is in IGN/START
position and the MASTER control lever in ON position. Start can be
aborted on ground only by the FADEC in case of failure.

B. Alternative Starting Procedure

(Ref. 74-31-00)
This sequence controlled by the pilot is as follows :
- the ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN/START selector switch in IGN/START position
and MAN START pushbutton switch command the start valve
- the MASTER control lever commands HP fuel shutoff valve.

CRANKING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
____________________________________

1. Air
__________
Supply
The air necessary for the starting comes from the duct connecting engine
bleed and the precooler via a 4 in.(101.6 mm) diameter duct. This duct is
attached to the engine before the precooler inlet.
Through operation of the croosfeed valve and APU bleed, the air necessary
for the starter is supplied by either :
- crossbleed from the other engine
- the APU and in that case, all the air bled from the APU is used for
starting
- an external source able to supply a pressure between 25 and 55 psig (1.72
and 3.79 bar).

2. ____________
Dry Cranking

A. Requirement
A dry motoring of the engine will be needed when :
- it is necessary to eliminate any fuel accumulated in the combustion
chamber
- a leak ckeck of engine systems is needed.
To perform this operation, the starter is engaged and the engine is
motored but the HP fuel shutoff valve remains closed and both ignition
systems are OFF.

NOTE : The procedure to perform a dry cranking is described in chapter

____
71-00-00 P. Block 501.

NOTE : Make sure that you do not go over the starter limits that follow:
____
- no engagement of the starter when the core speed is above 20
percent.
- the acceptable duty cycles can be performed by using one the
three following procedures:
- 4 consecutive cycles, each of 2 minutes duration with a 20
second rest between 2 consecutive attempts. After 4 cycles, wait
15 minutes to allow starter to cool before you try a new start
or motoring.
- one 5 minute cycle followed by a cooling period of 2 minutes
after the first motoring and a 10 minutes interval between the
following ones.
- one 15 minute cycle followed by a 15 minute cooling period
before you try a new start or motoring.
It is recommended to use the 15 minute cycle only for cooling
the engine to do a borescope inspection.

3. ____________
Wet Cranking

A. Requirement
A wet motoring will be needed when the integrity of the fuel system has
to be checked.
If such a test is performed, both ignition systems are off and the
starter is engaged to raise N2 up to the required speed of 20 percent.
The HP fuel shut off valve control lever is moved to ON and the exhaust
nozzle of the engine carefully monitored to detect any trace of fuel.
The test/engine should not be run for more than 15 seconds with the
ENG/MASTER 1(2) switch in the ON position to prevent fuel puddling in the
combustion chamber.

NOTE : The procedure to perform a wet cranking is describe in chapter

____

In all cases, the HP fuel shutoff valve control lever will be
returned to OFF and the engine will be motored for at least 60
seconds to eliminate entrapped fuel or vapor.

4. _______________________________
Starting Control and Indicating

A. General
The starting control signals are acquired by the FADEC unit from the ENG
START panel (115VU), and the overhead panel via EIU.

C. Operation

(1) ENG start panel is used in the following conditions :

(a) On ground for :

- engine dry cranking
- engine wet motoring
- engine starting (manual and automatic)

(b) In flight :
- in flight relight with starter assistance
- in flight relight without starter assistance

(2) Starting on ground

(Ref. Fig. 001)
(Ref. 74-31-00, para 2.A. and 2.B.)

(3) Engine relight in flight

FADEC identified windmilling or starter assisted conditions.
Restart in flight uses the same procedure as on the ground.

(a) Engine relight in windmilling configuration in flight conditions

(mach, altitude are in the windmilling relight range), the engine
can be relit without using the starter and provided N2 is:
- higher than 12 percent up to 20000 ft
- higher than 15 percent between 20000 and 27000 ft (maximum
relight altitude without starter assistance).
The procedure is as follows:
- Place ENG/MODE/CRANK/NORM/IGN/START selector switch in
IGN/START position
- place the MASTER control lever in ON position

(b) Relight using starter

The procedure is the same as for a start on ground.
The engine air start envelope is referenced in figure
(Ref. Fig. 002)

(4) Continuous ignition (Ref. 74-31-00, para. 1.C.)

D. Warnings
When a fault occurs during engine start, warning messages appear on the
upper ECAM. They warn the crew about the failure and indicate the
procedure to perform.

PNEUMATIC STARTER AND VALVE SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________________________

1. _______
Starter
The starter converts the compressed air flow coming from an engine, the APU
or an external air source into a high torque rotary movement. This movement
is transmitted to the engine HP rotor through the engine accessory drive
system. The physical and operational characteristics of the starter are
listed in Table 001.
The four inch diameter engine starter shutoff valve (SOV) is normally
closed, electrically controlled and pneumatically operated.

The magnetic drain plug (22) consists of an inner magnetic drain plug
and an outer check valve plug. The outer check valve plug will
prevent oil draining when magnetic plug is removed.

(2) Starter shutoff valve

(Ref. Fig. 003)
The starter shutoff is composed of two major sections, the valve flow
body section and the pneumatic actuator and control section.
The valve flow body section consists of the flow body, butterfly
plate shaft, bearings and seals enclosed in the valve body.
The pneumatic actuators and control section consist of the
controlling solenoid, diaphragms, torsion closing mechanism, shaft
actuating linkage and electrical position indicating switch.

B. Operation

(1) Starter
(Ref. Fig. 002)
The inlet housing assembly (1) directs the flow of compressed air to
the stator assembly (2) which, in turn, directs the air flow into the
blades of turbine wheel (3), producing high speed and low torque
rotation of turbine wheel (3).
Exhaust air is released to ambient at approximately ambient pressure.
The pinion gear (9), the 3 matched planetary gear set (25), three low
speed pinions (24) and internal ring gear transform the high speed
rotation with low torque of turbine wheel (3) into low speed and high
torque at output shaft (17).
The drive shaft assembly (17A) provides disengagement of output shaft
(17) from internal ring gear (23) after air to starter is shutoff and
when the aircraft engine speed exceeds pawl liftoff speed of drive
shaft assembly (17A), allowing output shaft (17) and drive shaft
assembly (17A) to rotate with the aircraft engine while pinion (9),
internal ring gear (23), planetary gear set (25) and turbine wheel
(3) coast to stop.
The inlet housing (1), incorporating axial containment ring (4) with
axial cutter ring (30) cutter pins, provides turbine wheel (3)
containment at speeds up to the maximum turbine free running speed.
Should the turbine wheel (3) moves axially after a thrust bearing
failure, the cutter pins (30) will cut the rim from the turbine wheel
and the separated parts shall be contained in the axial and radial
enclosed space of containment ring.
The sealing of the starter is ensured at output shaft assembly (17)
by a carbon seal (16). A magnetic plug (22) in the gear housing (10)
provides protection for the bearings by collecting any metallic
particles in lubricant, and allows to detect starter failure by
inspection.

C. Starter Lubrication
The lubrication is a wet sump splash system. The approved lubricating
oils are those specified by the generic term of engine oil (Material
No.CP2442). For more information, refer to the CFMI Service Bulletin
79-001 which lists the approved lubricating oils in use on the engine and
its accessories.

D. Starter shutoff valve

(Ref. Fig. 004)

(1) Closing operation The starter air valve remains closed with the
solenoid de-energized. Inlet air pressure is routed through a
downstream facing probe and an opening rate orifice in a chamber
solenoid closed by non-return valve (position shown). The pressure in
opening chambers is vented to ambient through the solenoid ball and
the closing-rate orifice. The pressure in chambers at opposite
position of the opening chambers is vented to ambient through the
vent orifices. The internal springs of the pneumatic actuators in
combination with the closing torsion spring force, closes the starter
control valve.

(2) Opening operation
The starter air valve is opened by energizing either of the solenoid
coils. Energizing the solenoid actuates the solenoid ball to the
position opposite that shown and open the non-return valve. Inlet air
pressure is routed in the opening chambers, then is sensed on both
diaphragms and pistons of the pneumatic actuators. The pressure
increase in the opening chambers and actuate the pistons when the
pressure is sufficient to overcome the internal springs and the
closing torsion spring. The pistons actuate to the butterfly open
position. The starter air valve opening rate is controlled by the
rate at which chambers at opposite position of the opening chambers
vents to ambient. These rates are controlled by the open rating
orifice, the purging orifice and the closing rate orifice.

(3) Manual override operation

The starter air valve is manually opened by rotating the lever
because there is no diaphragm force and pressure in the pneumatic
actuators. The handle can be rotated against the closing torsion
spring to open the butterfly. When the handle is released, the
torsion spring turns the shaft to the butterfly closed position and
the valve returns to normal operation.

(4) Visual position indicator operation

The manual override lever aligns with markings on the valve body to
provide an external indication of butterfly position.

(5) Downstream facing probe

The valve contains a downstream facing probe which prevents
contaminants from entering the valve actuator and also requires no
maintenance.

(6) Position switch operation

The normally open redundant electrical position switches are actuated
by the closing end of the actuator to provide remote indication when
the butterfly is in any position except closed.

(7) Redundant solenoid

The solenoid has two independent coils including 3 wires wound
together (1 active winding per channel and 1 shunt winding to both
active channels), either one of which when energized will open the
valve.

(8) Overpressure protection

A relief valve is incorporated to limit the actuator pressure in the
event that the inlet pressure exceeds the normal maximum value.
