Read the passage given below and answer the following questions (Question
nos. 50  53) based on the understanding of the passage.

Supporters of participant observation have argued that, compared to other research

techniques, it is least likely to lead to the sociologist imposing his reality on the social
world he seeks to understand. It, therefore, provides the best means of obtaining a valid
picture of social reality. With a structured interview, a predetermined set of questions
which the interviewee is requested to answer – or a mailed questionnaire : a set of printed
questions to which the respondent is asked to provide written answers – the sociologist
has already decided what is important. With present questions he imposes his framework
and priorities on those he wishes to study. By assuming the questions are relevant to his
respondents, he has already made many assumptions about their social world. Although
the participant observer begins his work with some preconceived ideas based on book-view,
he at least has the opportunity to directly observe the social world. Intensive observations
over a period of time provided William F. Whyte with a picture of what was important in
the lives of the Italian Americans he studied. Without this exposure to their daily routine
he would have remained ignorant of many other priorities. Had he relied solely on
interviews, this ignorance would have prevented him from asking important and relevant
questions.

50. The opening line of the passage indicates that participant observation is
(1) An objective method of data collection
(2) The best method of data collection
(3) In a way, more objective than other methods of data collection
(4) The only acceptable method of data collection

51. As per the passage, participant observation has a clear advantage over other
methods of data collection in the sense that
(1) It is more uniform (2) It is more gratifying
(3) It yields in-depth information (4) It is more precise

52. On the basis of his study of Italian Americans by participant observation, Whyte
wrote the book
(1) Participant Observation (2) The Italian Americans
(3) Cornerville (4) Street Corner Society

53. The essential point that makes participant observation a different method as
compared to other methods of data collection is
(1) Intensive survey
(2) Structured interviews
(3) Observing while participating
(4) Participatory research
